I never got ads with sound but today I got a pop-up (never happened to me before visiting your site) and I was preparing an email to send you guys (I will send it to Alex) with a warning I've got from Chrome about one of your ads possible containing malware...

They do the same in Buenos Aires. I am not sure they use the metro for a ride downtown but they use it to keep warm in the winter. Normally, people do not mind and they let them have their nap in peace...

I just want to clarify that those are NOT direct donations. They are "offered goods and services" for free and the amount in the site is what they calculate is the value of those goods and services.

Personally, I find the whole thing more like a great promotion for the guys that did the website that a real help for the cab driver that suppousedly has to contact this donors to actually get those goods and services... (sigh).

The cab driver did give that money back and it is not the first time it happens. Not all cab drivers are crooks, not all argentinians are corrupt.

BTW I am from Argentina and I live in the US. Argentina's society is a bit more corrupt that let's say the Swiss, but during the Bush administration my motto was "The US is getting Argentinized". The whole Bush era made the US look like any other bananaland country out there.

I wouldn't call most of those people "smart"... maybe talented at something but with a few exceptions most of them do not enter into the category of smart... (the 18 years old Pope? Attila?...)

Wow, normally I don't like lobsters, not to eat them nor to look at them because they remind me of cockroaches..., but I find this particular one extremely cute!

I used to do the same but in Spanish. Not all were related to their profession some were just really ad cominations.

My two favorites were a teacher I have in primary school "Viuda de Alegre" that translates as "Happy's Widow" and the other one was "Victoria de Pitito" that (in Argentina, were I am from) translates as "Small penis victory"... I never, never understood why she used her husband last name (Pitito) directly with her name "Victoria" when she could have used her maiden last name in the middle.... It was difficult to see her business card and not giggle...

I have to make an addition to my previous comment and that is that they should have for sure separate feeds (I don't read neatorama through RSS so I never noticed the queue was polluting the site).

Back to the list of possible improvements:

1. Separate feeds (a must do)
2. Don't make it about quantity but about quality and limit the # of posts per day per person. So if people want to link to their own site, they will to think harder on what to post -quality wise-, if they are limited to i.e. 2 posts per day. I have seen some people posting everything they have, I guess that hoping "something" will make it to the front page.
3. Don't use the votes to select the postings that will make it to Neatorama, make it an editor's decision
4. Give yourselves the option to add comments.

Now, if you have to choose just one option, it has to be #1. If I was receiving NR via feed I would also be very unhappy of receiving the queue with it!

I think it is a cool idea that should be improved instead of killed.

As I see it it is a way of making the suggestions to the editors public (and maybe make their job a little easier). I mean, some of us we send suggestions from time to time. Those may be picked or not, but I guess that sometimes they are not chosen just because the editors do not have time to check every submission or to write a whole post about them. As the queue shows, people can send anything and everything...

Editors can keep Neatorama "cool" by approving what THEY like NO MATTER how many votes a post receives and -maybe- by having the option to add their own smart or spicy comments to the post once it goes to the main site.

On the other hand, us, the readers, we can totally skip the queue if we don't like to read anything that is not "pure" Neatorama but if we have some time to kill we can go to the queue to take a glance to what is being "suggested" to the editors as we do with other blogs out there.

Another thing that may help would be to have a limit of posts per day per user to have more variety in the queue.

My two cents, San :)

Picture 1 :"Finally, the proof. They are among us. They have been hiding in our soil..., until one alien got horny"

2 and 3: "Thanks Dad for making sure I will need years of therapy in my future... and you HAVE to take a picture, uhm?"
