I don't think she dropped the ball on purpose. If you recall, she went to the mound and told Ellen Sue to throw high fast balls. "Can't hit em'...can't lay off em'". She was trying to strike Kit out but that was the moment Kit proved that "I like the high ones".
Great movie. One very interesting moment is actually a scene that was taken out of the movie but is shown in the bonus scenes on the special edition version. You recall Marla Hooch leaving the team after getting married. She returns but has to play for the same team as Kit (Racine). In one of their first WS games, Marla tells Dottie she is pregnant but don't tell anyone or else she will get kicked out of the league. During the game, Dottie gets on 1st base and gets very competitive with Kit. She steals 2nd and kicks Marla in the stomach. Marla is seriously injured and everyone fears she lost the baby. They start yelling at Dottie asking her "What's wrong with you?". Next scene shows Dottie in her bedroom on the phone learning the baby and Marla are ok. She sits on the bed and starts crying which is what we see in the standard version when her husband shows up. I think personally they should have left it in.
I was a big Batman fan when I was a kid. So much so that when I was 20, Adam West was signing autographs at a car show I went to dressed in his original Batman costume from the tv show. I waited in line for 20 minutes with a bunch of 5-10 year olds who had no idea who West was. I was all giddy when it was my turn. He had to have thought I was nuts...or even Battcock.
Perhaps the greatest director that will ever live. He actually had a very severe anxiety attack the night he finally left Martha's Vineyard after 6 months filming Jaws there. Richard Dreyfuss was at the same hotel and helped calm him down.
Never knew that about Mel being the inspiration for Buddy Sorrell but I can see the similarities. My fave is still History of the World Part 1. Love that movie!! Thanks Eddie.
Good movie but there a few I think are better such as The Man who Shot Liberty Valance, The Unforgiven and my personal favorite Destry (w/Audie Murphy) which was the remake of Jimmy Stewarts Destry Rides Again.
How unbelievable that the second gun did not fire either. And the guts for the prez to go after him like that. It sure was a different time back then. Unless our president was Clint Eastwood or Steven Segal, I don't think you'll ever see it happen again. Great article Eddie.
WOW! The absolute epitome of a 60's bikini movie. Have to admit I never heard of it before. Bet it helped a ton of pre-teenage boys get through puberty!! Side note...I do recall character actor Fred Clark who is in the film from The Beverly Hillbillies as Dr. Clyburn.
I absolutel LOVE Dean Martin. Sinatra may have been king but Dean was the coolest guy ever. And what a voice. Next to John, Paul, George & Ringo, Dean is my all time favorite. Thanks Eddie. A lot of things I didn't know.
Have to hand it to you Eddie...there were two things I thought of when I started reading...1) Davy Jones was on the same Ed Sullivan Show as The Beatles on 2/9/64 and 2) Michael Nesmith's mother invented Liquid Paper. You covered them both...NICE! My favorite episode was one where the entire show was a mini-documentary of the group in concert. I remember watching with amazement the girls reaction to them. The screams...Good God! Nice piece Ringo Klaus!
Eddie...you always have such great and interesting articles! So for $5,000 you could have owned Garland's dress, Witch's hat, the lion's costume and the Wizard's suit. Today...easily worth over a mil!! Easily.
