Nick Gisburne's Comments

I have so many books that I have to stack them two deep on my shelves - the ones behind are the ones in poorer condition or which I probably won't read again. No, parting with any of my books will NEVER happen.

On the other hand deep shelves are exactly what I DON'T need for my ever-expanding collection of DVDs (two 6x3-foot racks have already overflowed) so I'm going for a custom build solution, and have discovered that decking planks are exactly the right width for DVDs. They're also 8 feet long so I can use more vertical space.

In fact for paperback books they are also perfect, so I may go to single-depth book shelves soon. My wide shelves will be released for storage of wide books.

I did once work out how much it would cost to cover every wall in one room with Billy shelves and worked out that I could more happily spend the money on more books :)

As a side issue, if you cover your walls with books they make for great insulation!

This could easily be misinterpreted as a figher-pilotesque tally of the number of Daleks you've run over in your car, in which case when the invasion comes you'll be first on their list!

Style and Westfield absolutely do not go together. For some reason Westfield shopping centres seem to be appearing in more and more English cities, and they all look the same - marble, glass, row after row of bland, soulless identi-shops, with no character whatsoever.

My favourite is 'forcing students to wear prison jumpsuits for dress code violations'. What would they do if the kids actually went to school in a prison jumpsuit? Make them wear a... er... hmm...

Yes, I realise that's what he meant, but 'we won a war in four years' does then seem to suggest that the 'we' who won the war was the US, when in fact 'we' (the Allies) fought and won the war in six. Needless to say, claims that Brazil and Mexico 'won a war in three years' (joining as they did in 1942) don't necessarily mean they did the job faster.

Didn't World War II span six years, not four? 1939-1945. The 10 years in Afghanistan he mentions probably reflect the significantly smaller number of troops sent to that region. Thankfully the losses incurred in the latter conflict don't even scrape the surface of the deaths in WW2, though of course any of those deaths in either war is a tragedy.

Not only do we British not know much about that particular war, I'm fairly certain that most people over here haven't even heard of it. I've never seen it mentioned on TV, not even once, which is surprising given the number of history documentaries which are shown on British TV. Or perhaps the famous wars are all so well-known because they're made into one or more famous movies.

Shouldn't they be casting these amazing creations in bronze and selling them for a gazillion each? Or maybe they do that already and this is just something to pass the time at weekends.

I've got an old wardrobe with no back in it if anyone wants to pay me some serious money for a semi-authentic Narnia experience. Sadly there's no lion, but my dogs will get amorous with your leg given half a chance.

This is not a good test because the $2 just comes from nowhere and has no consequences other than making someone wealthier.

A better test might be this: you need to take $2 from the wealthier person and give it to the poorer one, or take $2 from a poor person and give it to a wealthier one. Which would you do? I hope most people would choose the former, but it doesn't explain why US politicians seems to prefer the latter.

Chair + lamp pushed vertically against the wall, with a high centre of gravity and a trailing electrical wire in a children's room... what could go wrong? As to the anticipated use, what's wrong with sitting on the end of the bed and reading by the light on the bedroom ceiling? It's different, I'll give them that, but so would be a chair + cheese grater combo for the kitchen.

Impressive, but you should only be able to claim the record if you manage to get back OUT of the parking space again :P

I'm sure I remember seeing a car which could turn its wheels sideways and automatically park itself, so would need practically zero clearance.
