Northern states like DST so they can play more golf, softball, and other diversions after work. Didn't the former Soviet Union use double daylight savings for a couple months in summer? I wonder if they still do in today's Russia and the former SSRs.
Come on now folks. Imagine a world in which you would be missing the excitement of a REAL letter! Where else for a 47 cent stamp(or whatever they charge these days), a piece of paper, an envelope, and some ink can you send a friend a real letter telling them how things are going in your life? We should set aside one day a month and sit down and write a real letter to 5 friends or family. To hell with Facebook, Skype, iPhone calls et al. Did anyone ever calculate the true cost of each message you send by those other methods?
Fascinating. Wish I had known this when I made my visit to Graceland in 1994. I would have imagined Elvis greeting us at the front door. Since the Beatles made their pilgrimage, I wonder how many other rock and roll bands have. When Mrs.O and I were there, our tour group included four rough looking German punk rockers who were just super excited about it all.
I went to college with a guy who had a true photographic memory. You could ask him what was on say page 168 of a textbook and he'd tell you. Our brains are all wired in a variety of ways. How else can you explain differences in mentality when it comes to liberal vs. conservative politics?
"Leaf Peeping" is one of the few things I miss about living in central New York. MrsO. and I traveled back one October just to see them again. The views in the high peaks area of the Adirondacks was awesome. There is a place south of Syracuse called Cedarvale that has colors that match up with any of these Nat.Geo photos.
What a cool bit of history. I never knew old Blue Eyes was a crossword fan. I also do mine in ink, nothing like the feel of a good ball point pen writing on newsprint. One time I was doing a puzzle in the faculty lounge and a fellow teacher asked me what I did when I made a mistake. I calmly told her that I do not make any. You have to be arrogant once in a while.
Otto Palindrome was a character in that quirky amusing short-lived TV show Quark. Every time I saw Conrad Janis, the actor who played Otto, I couldn't help but think of Otto Palindrome. Yreka Bakery indeed.
Not being a guitar player, I never thought there was any use for the darned things. Now I'll never look at another one w/o having an image of say Slash picking one up to use.
