It's a scooter with four wheels and some body work. It'll be a good deal safer than a scooter! Trouble is, it'll take up a lot more room on the road than a scooter or a bike, though having a more modern engine it probably won't make pollution much worse than scooters. I can see this turning out to be a really backward move unless the road network improves to keep pace - which it might well not.

At last the penny is dropping and designers are starting to realise that electric cars are not (initially) going to be a replacement to internal combustion cars, but a supplement. Designing something that will do 80mph, have a range of 200 miles and outperform most small cars is barking up the wrong tree entirely.

Electrics (intially) will be ideal for the second car in a household, the one that gets taken to the shops or takes the kids to school or the dog to the vet. I reckon the most practical design will be something like http://www.thedigitalbuffalo.com/japan/japanimages/MINIvan500.jpg
with three rows of double seats, the rear two pairs of which can be removed. It'd take five kids to school or for a day out within 30 miles or so, it'll carry home DIY materials from the shop, it'll take the garden waste to the dump and collect the Christmas tree. What it won't do is do more than 100 miles a day, nor will it do motorway speeds without a long runup. So what? That's what the other car's for.

Well, it seems the general opinion is that caller frustration is (however unforgiveably) at the root of this.

I suspect it's because no matter where the call-centre is they're not able to answer your question. This is generally because by the time you've got so desperate that you're willing to give up and call for help you've alread exhausted all the obvious tricks - and guess what they take you through - obvious tricks.

As for receiving cold calls - we in the UK have one up on your side of the Atlantic - we don't have to put up with them. A quick visit to TPSonline and within a few days the calls dry up to next to nothing. We get less than two a year now!
Same with junk mail - MPSonline squashes it.

So what colour plate would our car have? My wife's unlikely to attain the "higher" grade plate, but having spent five years as a driving instructor and another five training minibus drivers I shouldn't have trouble qualifying.

The reason she was ordered to take her test again is simple - it's the option which is available and least likely to cause the law to be regarded as an ass. Magistrates can't remove licences permanently, but they could impose a long ban (which would have had lots of people up in arms about her being a poor old dear) or nothing, which would have been too lenient. This way he's passed the buck to the examiner and kicked the problem into touch. If she's safe enough to pass a test she can drive, if she isn't she can't.

Oh, and of course, many test centres are near 70mph dual carriageways, which are often indistinguishable from motorways apart from the colour of the road signs. Driving tests often use such roads.

Good old Spooner...

"Young man, you have hissed all my mystery lectures, tasted two whole worms and been caught fighting liars in the quad. You must leave Oxford tonight by the town drain."

He also once proposed the loyal toast after a meal thus...

"Let us glaze our arses to the queer old dean!".

Tricky. I put 50 liters in mine on Friday and it's covered just under 500 miles - and the needle isn't back to where it was before I filled up. Trouble is that parking it on a slope really upsets the gauge.
