As the statement of the committee says, his prize is not for his achievement, but a symbol of a new way of communication and diplomacy among the nations. There were others before, like Willy Brandt, who received the prize for a new way of multilateral relations, which only after the award showed their real effects. The nobel peace prize helped in the case of Willy Brandt to get support for his politics in the society, and I can see the same idea at work here.
I have the impression that not many actually read the explanation of the committee, as to why they decided like this. I'm more or less neutral to the decision, but regret that once more discussions are led without proper knowledge of the background.

I was there and saw them walking through the streets of Berlin. It was not creepy at all, it was wonderful. And amazing to see how many people went to see them, the city was packed! It's been a long time that so many people came together to watch something seemingly silly and childish as it sounds/looks like. Keeping in mind that there were several terrorist warnings as well for this event. Nice demonstration of how terrorists failed to intimidate citizens of Berlin. We are not afraid!

I grew up in Freiburg and I can tell you that the public transport system there is fantastic. Even before building Vauban the tram and bus system in Freiburg supported leaving your car outside the city and get in by tram (parking lots outside city = free, parking in city = hard to find and VERY expensive). Trust me, you don't need a car in Freiburg, not even in other parts of the city. You can go even skiing in winter by train and bus in the black forest, no car needed at all.

It was in 1939 when John Steinbeck wrote "The Grapes of Wrath" (awesome book by the way) in which he let one of the female characters in the end breastfeed an old man who is about to die from hunger in the Great Depression. Needless to say, that scene didn't make it in the movie version of 1940, but I would have expected that American prudery and fear of anything biological, anything related to nakedness or sexuality evolved from there.
I'm surprised this issue gets so much attention. In Berlin in a train station you can see right now a gigantic picture of a woman breastfeeding her baby as an advertisement for an exhibition. Don't see or her any people complaining about that, even though you can see her nipple (gasp!)

I certainly love this idea! I find it a miracle sometimes how something sent from Berlin to south Germany merely takes 12 hours to be delivered and I often wonder how many and what kind of people are working hard to bring my letter from A to B. Nothing depressing or boring about it at all in my opinion.

What about central Europe? I'd like to know if Danish count their money differently than Italians, for example. Or Swiss and Spanish.
I will try to check next time I'm in a bank to see how they do it in Germany :-)
