Perceive's Comments

If you're not involved in this shooting, and yet a post of a short film that tangentially relates to it upset you so much that the only recourse is to have it censored, what you have isn't empathy, it's hysteria.

And if you think your feelings for strangers somehow entitles you to condemn a perfectly innocent blog post, that's not compassion, that's ego-mania.

Let's be generous and say each of the 6 deceased in the NIU shooting had 100 close friends and relatives who are devastated by their deaths. Then, oh, let's say 1,000 people from the NIU campus are freshly traumatized by the incident. That makes about 1,600 people who can legitimately claim that this post made them feel bad.

Now, let's try to imagine how many people in the world are freshly affected by deadly car accidents at any given time. 1 million? 2? Does that mean there's even greater impetus to never post anything related to car crashes, or even cars? Of course not.

Let's keep things in perspective here. Lots of different subjects may be unpleasant for lots of people. Most of the time, most people may shudder a little and move on (like I do with any insect-related posts on Neatorama), particularly when there is no media hype surrounding their particular grievance.

Not the tired old urban myths about Hitler and gun control again. Private ownership of firearms were banned prior to the rise of the Nazis. In fact, the Nazis REVOKED the law banning firearms.

Here's the real way to spot whether a government is approaching the level of the Nazis: see if they're committing genocide.

Tiago,

Oh come on now, one has to be an Apple fan to find a news piece trumpeting the tragedy of receiving a standard form letter appalling? Why, I'm tempted to accuse you of being a Microsoft fanboy, except I know that Microsoft makes excellent spellcheckers a part of their programs, something you're obviously deprived of. :)

What a ridiculously incendiary slant on a story about a standard form letter. While such is to be expected from some local TV station desperate for eyeballs, what gives with Neatorama editors adding to it?

I must be one of the very few people on Earth to get Rowling's message in the book, and not from her meeting with fans. It was perfectly clear (perfectly queer?) to me that Dumbledore was gay in book 7. He was passionately in love with the then handsome Grindelwald. In fact, that bit of unrequited love was foil for another in the book: that of Snape and Lily Potter. In Dumbledore's case, his love of someone so unscrupulous made Dumbledore forsake all the good things he stood for. For Snape, his love of Lily inspired him to be a far better person. Those were the two most poignant centerpieces of the book, both largely told in flashbacks when the people involved were dead.

Dumbledore basically gave up on romantic love after that, and focused on redeeming himself. Thus, he never had any reason to say he's gay. By the same token, Snape never said he was in love with Lily Potter, or anybody else, but he didn't need to.

Oh Rocky, I don't know where you get the notion that those kids don't support the war. Why, it seems to me, they're trying their hardest to elect a pro-war candidate as the commander-in-chief in a time of war. Now, either they support the war, or they're just stupid. And well, if they can spot a giant catfish when they see one, they can't be that dumb.

Eh, I come to this site to read up on interesting things. And I don't mind if that interesting bit is serious and upsetting. Keep up the good work, Neato Editors.

Touché, johnald.

And might I add, besides extremist philosophies like the Church of Euthanasia, most environmental campaigns, when you boil it down, is saying that people should exploit the Earth responsibly.

This is just the same old blonde extinction urban legend with a dye job:

Please delete the spotlight on this bit of horrific journalism, or at least point out how faulty it is.
