@Sam Dios

The evidence is as follows:
1. She checked into the hotel using her rival's name
2. She conveniently had a large amount of cash on her to pay for the hotel
3. She didn't come forward even though there was national news coverage, obviously including pictures of herself
4. She secretly fled across the country. Anyone who had genuine amnesia would easily be run across since they'd likely stop and ask for help or directions.
5. Her car was in the pit, but she was completely uninjured. If her husband or someone else had attacked her, there would have been more evidence of violence.

How did she kidnap the Mormon missionary? I've known some, and they are NEVER allowed to be by themselves. Waking, sleeping, whatever, they always have to be with their mission companion. Their church is really serious about it.

Though I hate it when I see people driving Hummers and Escalades, there is actually another reason that there are few very small cars in the US. The government has very strict guidelines on car safety, and a lot of those tiny European and Japanese car models don't have enough of a crumple zone to pass the guidelines. Though I would love to have a very energy-efficient car, I also don't want to die instantly when some SUV hits me going 75mph on the highway. Also, people seem to forget that fuel cells, solar panels, etc. take up a huge amount of energy to make. It is generally more environmentally friendly to keep driving an older or used car than to discard it for a brand new more "energy-efficient" model. I'm not saying that I don't think we need to change, but there is a lot of background to this issue that people aren't aware of.

Ah, the joys of a monoculture.

@Homer
A lot of the people who go around saying "Well, look at bananas (or housecats, or corn, or whatever)! Obviously they were created by an intelligent being!" fail to take into account that almost all of the plants and animals humans surround themselves with have been heavily altered by humans. Corn was bred from a type of grass; wild bananas from thousands of years ago were doubtless just as different. We manipulate evolution to benefit ourselves, and this (the banana blight) is the consequence of breeding for ease of use without regard to the dangers of a monoculture.

@gail

I read Fanny Burney's account, and it sounds MUCH worse than the fistula surgery, even though it took place around 500 years later. Agh, I can see why she couldn't even talk about it for months after... and how would her husband have felt if he came home to find that she had died?

I saw it in NYC, the front few rows were covered in plastic and called the "Splatter Zone." It was awesome. At one point they were literally throwing fake blood on the audience.

It seems like an internet version of a white elephant raffle... except the proceeds don't go to charity or a good cause, just to the proprietors. I'm still tempted to try it out though.

It might actually have a practical purpose as a windbreak. In the winter or bad weather it would keep strong cross-winds, snowdrifts, debris, etc. from endangering traffic.
