I know a few Muslims, among them a woman who was a university professor in Afghanistan. She was forced to flee with her daughter when the Taliban took over. She had committed the sin of being an educated woman.
When I was a kid, I thought the standard signs said, "Trespassers will be persecuted". It really scared me--I imagined all kinds of torture. Somebody finally told me it was PROsecuted, and then I wasn't scared anymore.
I do not understand why people emigrate to a land where the customs are so different and then expect that country to adapt to them. Even less do I understand the receiving country's condoning customs so antithethical to its own values. Even less, subsidizing those antithetical values.
I remember watching the show when we first moved to California in 1954 (?). I was 13, and wanted to look just like her when I grew up. Sadly, there is no resemblance.
I had a colored chick when I was 11. His feathers grew in normally (white), and he ruled the house. He rode around on our Airedale's head. When the weather warmed up, my mother insisted that he live outside (he was getting bigger, too). He proceeded to eat all the petunias she had planted in the window boxes. Then he started crowing.
A friend who lived on a farm volunteered to take him, promising that he would live free and happy. Two weeks later, the guy showed up and complained that Chirstopher had been tough! I was devastated.
Jerse--Isn't it a good idea for us all to be reminded of how things should be and what we should be working toward? Human Rights Day seems to me to represent a very important concept, now widely ignored, even by the president of the country that based its founding on the equality of rights of men.
Fred Thompson may have a hot wife (how did that happen?) and be on TV, but I find him repulsive. How about a 50's-60's gas guzzler that tries to act like it's worth something?
We had a cat who loved cantaloupe so much he would eat through the rind. We had to put the melons in the refrigerator to be able to eat them outselves. We had another cat who adored peas. He would chatter and even salivate when he smelled them cooking.
I read at least three books a week. I watch very little TV--The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Battlestar Gallactica, the occasional program on the History Channel. I'd much rather read. I read mostly fiction, but about 10% is non-fiction. Oh, yeah. I read books in two languages.
My daughters read, my sons-in-law read, my grandchildren read--even the four-year-old reads.

I REALLY missed Jon and Stephen. I hope the writers get the deal they want (which still isn't as good a deal as they should have).
