there's a nice audio version of this from several years ago called 'recorded delivery' by janeck schaffer. he sent a voice activated dictaphone through the post.

this one is different to the american one- it uses the air pressure generated by the waves rather than piping the sound of the waves themselves. there was (is?) a wave organ in liverpool in the uk which uses wave pressure like this. these types of instruments date back to the renaissance at least...

i've seen it in the flesh, and actually it's rather dull. it's a nice piece of engineering - but the photo is nicer than the sculpture on account of the timelapse...
