Nancy B. - Do you seriously think this film doesn't deserve the accolades it gets? I would agree with about Kubrick but I think this film is his best work. George C. Scott's performance alone was worth the price of admission. He was hysterically funny. But, that's why there is chocolate and vanilla ice cream LOL
The story about the oil drum filled with cells tells you how times and priorities change. It reminds of the the story of some moron at NBC in the sixties who decided it would be great to save money and reuse all the old videos they had in a warehouse in New Jersey. So he authorized them to record over the tapes of thousands of hours of programming. That's the reason the first episode of "The Tonight Show" with Johnny carson doesn't exist. It's a shame.
Check this site out. Not only does he have the designs for almost every team in America and Canada, including high schools, (which really impressed me,) but he has ones he designed himself. It's an amazing site.
If "Maple Street" is the one where neighbors turn on one another because of their lights being out and cars starting on their own, among other things, then that was the best one in my opinion, hands down. It's just shows how people can be manipulated and carries a strong message even to this day. Great series.
I find these machines fascinating When I watch "How It's Made," it's always the machines that do the actual work that fascinate me the most. Somebody actually has to think these things out. I will say however that the narrator made me think I was watching an old Monty Python satire.
I'm 54 years old and I loved this show. There was always something interesting on it along with the fact that they prodded kids to read, which is always a good thing. But to blame Bush? That's a stretch and I hated the guy. I think it's time for PBS to get it's act together and stop begging for money ALL OF THE TIME. If they show that doo-wop special again, I'm going to scream. No wonder nobody watches it.
I thought he was great although I agree that they have to lose the haircut for this kid. I could barely walk when I was his age LOL and I'm sure Johnny and June got a big kick out of it up there.
