Of course, pedophiles and abductions happened in the 50s overlooked by "back in my day..."
But overall this is actually still a good idea in the sense the over-nanny-ness of parents don't really allow kids to be kids anymore. And don't get me started about the fact parents think it's bad to say "no" to a kid (it's a friggin' kid, get them used to it!) or that you can't threaten your own kid with corporal punishment, so now kids are entitled little craps because of, pardon the pun, kids gloves parenting. Sometimes I want to smack the self-smug important little poops so hard their parents feel it or just go right to the parents (usually the mother) and just start a beatdown, the one the kid should have had when he mouthed off and/or repeatedly did something wrong knowing it was wrong.
Things is if you're the wealthy elite they get the same thing, so peeps here saying this is "poor uneducated people," best think again. Granted the wealthy elite send their precious kids to private "schools" which cost money, many though (three come to mind) supposedly the kids create their own curriculum. So the only difference is they go to a building where the name "school" is on it so people think well it must be valid. The kids then graduate, well, rather, when they hit what would be senior year they go off to college, a liberal college which too is a pick-your-course variety, which there's several around my New England area, small colleges, very, and fully accredited by the same smoke-and-mirrors system people here are oddly defending (sheep, you're in the web and don't even know you're sticking to it). Then those kids because they went to all these special schools (i.e. from wealth) get offered lucrative six-figure jobs and stuff and technically were unschooled their entire life, only it wasn't usually at home. Regardless they're spoiled craps but get great jobs, it's like paying for a diploma mill.
The entire system is broken, pointing fingers at "unschooling" and saying it doesn't work is disingenuous, and laughably narrow minded of people here. And for the record I'm a college graduate who's doing well in his career but realize the whole thing is just a system to get you a piece of paper that is supposedly worth something but it's not about making you a better person, it's about pigeonholing and as someone above said making you a slave to a system. School would be about what you want out of life if it were real, but it's not, it's about sticking you in small boxes that will bolt up to some system of society. If you don't see this, well, congrats, you're part of the problem.
Typical southern redneck "teh whaAr of n'Arthern ahgression" (trying to type that incoherent and uneducated sounding like mouth born and (in)bred southerners say it.
As I told one of the typical, slow working, not bright, worthless southern hicks who worked with my in Atlanta (who I later fired then again, in the south, they hire mostly northerners, after all, southerners are too lazy and stupid to get the job done) "Germany tore down a wall and got over it but you guys are still griping over your petty war you started a century and a half ago? Then again, smart people learn to move on, the dumb ones, wellll...
Also the funniest thing about dumb southerners (oxymoron) is they think any "yankee" had something to do with the war. Beauty being when they came at me with that "teh whAr" and "ahGression" crap, I told them the reality was my family didn't immigrate to the US until the 20th century, so they're blaming me for something my generations of people had nothing to do with. Then again, typical southerner dumbarses are never bright enough to think maybe my family wasn't involved. They're just too small-minded petty and ignorant.
Dang. All misty-eyed here. What a heartwarming story about community and friends.
Felix isn't a troll, he's telling it like it is, life can suck and be cruel so we should all band together for the short time we're on the planet and do courageous and kind things for one another.
Back in the day this wasn't uncommon and kids kinda behaved more. Now we have the entitlement generation with hands-off parenting and this PC BS where we're supposed to love them, even if they're being bad, which, if you had no carrot and stick, just all carrot, how's that been working out for us? Hasn't, kids are all unruly snots and the parents are worse. This isn't violence, this is simply punishment, and sometimes punishment within reason works. The only bad part of this is the kids parents should be probably getting the paddling too.
It's that insular arguments felixthecat and others make, some of the ones I hear from my university with professors so self-sanctimonious one what THEIR always narrowing interpretation of the status quo should be with audience and music, that drives people to think "elitism" and also drives smaller and smaller attendance while drying up people wanting to attend and support classical music. It's an odd, very lemming-to-the-cliff mentality because the eventual outcome of not embracing changes will result in a died out music form nobody will get to enjoy, simply because some people's conservative cluelessness of "in my day..." got in the way of the fact the world is always changing, change or die in fact, so die it will.
Had a chance to attend some very contemporary, if not avant garde, pieces by the Elements Quartet, a string group. The audience, partly purists and partly people who hadn't really been to such a performance, and some of the pieces were bordering on acrobatic, and the audience responded very accordingly. The first time they did the group shot glances into the audience, not ones of horror or disgust, but astonishment and surprise. Soon, movement by movement, piece by piece, the audience excepting the purists would be moved more, and the quartet would, like at perhaps a rock or jazz concert, eat it up and play more to the crowd, it was energizing them, it became more interactive. Soon some of the purists in the audience included ones I was acquainted with, gave in to the music and the vibe in the room and too would burst into applause at the right moments where a piece would rocket to a virtuosic crescendo then break off maybe leaving one not hanging, the group now smiling in appreciation at their power from the stage and the power of the music. It was pure magic that night.
At a reception after the concert I talked to a couple of the, VERY classically trained and engrained in the usual tight stuffy uppity etiquette and they said they were thrilled by it. They didn't mind at all and only made them raise the bar of their performance because they were engaged.
Engaged... what music should be about, in fact, the birthplaces of music in Africa it was all about being moved TO music and letting oneself go free. How weird that some western society has dictated that music now should mean locking one's emotions in a cage, talk about puritanical.
Shame some purists clearly don't get what music is in fact truly about and need to pull that log out of their ass. It's like linguists trying to stop languages from evolving, which they all do, if they don't, they die out.
If you can't rudimentarily speak or understand the language, don't visit the country.
I've backpacked Europe and learned a lot of basic sayings and customs to make sure I was prepared and kept an open mind about where I traveled, including different signage and just accepted them.
So if someone cam to the United States from anywhere, Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Pacific, South America, anywhere, and can't be bothered to learn the rules, customs, and language, zero sympathy for you, sorry. Not every country on the planet kowtows to other country's customs, so this exit sign thing is silly, understand and accept differences in countries and move on.
That site was pretty lame. Weak. The person that did this couldn't even be bothered to create new copy for different years? Seriously? So it regurgitates whatever year you put in the same tripe over and over (glazed eyes? 3D, movies, whatever...), not even interesting stuff. The captain obvious comments about books and stuff, like we're supposed to go "WowweeEEE there was books back then and you didn't read anything on computers, I had no idea?!" To top it off the glacial crawl of the complete tripe to see the same stupid stuff over and over is just a bother.
Seriously, Neatorama posts some pretty awesome and cool things with links, but this, this was definitely not one of them.
I went to a very large university and there wasn't a single asian in my BFA (including art history) program of a couple hundred, nor was there a single one in theatre. Handful of just about every other skin color (black, latino, even eastern block) and culture, but not a single person of asian descent, not one. In fact the arts building that had hundreds of students going in and out it's doors was like western world, only time you'd see someone asian would be going in for music class.
The same can't be said when I had to fulfill my math requirement classes, I was the minority. Or any time I had to use the library at any hour there were tons, I swear they don't like to have lives.
I live in Oswego County, it you look at that satellite view, gander that lake fully in the frame, about center on the left, that's Lake Ontario, we live at the eastern (right) end of it. Oh, I should mention we get 180 inches a year. A. Year. 180. This is due to the lake effect snow machine, look that up if you don't know, but it can easily produce snow into the feet measured range in no time, a day, or less.
Everyone whining about snow don't know jack until you live in this area where your wimpy laughably nothing "blizzard" wouldn't even dent the daily grind. Heck, 6" wouldn't close school in these parts, neither would 12", you'll always find food on the store shelves, what you got is just another day up here.
Oh, and just north of me is Tug Hill, the snowiest place east of the Rockies, they get as much as 400" a year, and no, nobody panics, nobody freaks out, school, business, life goes on. Honestly all of us up here are laughing at the central east coast for being a bunch of pansies. Buck up people, you don't even know what snow is.
Having lived in Atlanta it's spot on to where the areas of white people verses black people live (hint, white is black). No of course not 100% but I can tell you having visited all over the city people this map maps out the areas quite well.

150 years ago, you lost, get over it. Geez.

I'd be fine if they went a step further and tasered these morons for simply being morons.
