Lan3-- “When two vowels go walking, the second one does the talking” may not be a perfect rule for English words, this is a great rule for remembering how to pronounce German words (especially German last names) which often have "ie" or "ei" and which always seem to cause confusion!
Black squirrels are everywhere in the DC metro area (in fact, the whole time I lived there I don't think I ever saw a regular old grey/tan one.) They look disconcertingly like rat, which are the other main wildlife in the city, and because they are feed by the tourists/tourists garbage, in some areas they have lost much of their fear of humans and will come way too close for comfort.)
Also, be on the lookout for the white squirrel (I'm assuming some kind of albinism) that lives by the Vietnam Memorial!
I was about one-- and had just started saying full (or close to full sentences. My mother had the television on all day watching the coverage, but figured I was too busy playing in the other room to notice.
But when my father came home from work that night, I ran to great him at the door, stood in front of him and announced, in my most serious voice. "Spaceship go boom. All dead."
I don't remember this of course-- but my mother does, and it still chokes her up to tell the story.
