I think it is more that they transferred information, rather than material. Nothing new was created at the far end, it is just that the photon there immediately reflected the state of the one at the close end.
I doubt that there is anything classified going on in the civilian ATC towers. Are random people allowed up there? I would sure hope not. But it does not seem likely that this guy's kid was a trained terrorist or anything.
Was it the most common sense thing to do? Probably not, but I bet it was a real treat for the kid, and that is pretty priceless in my book.

I waited tables for 4 years. It sucks when someone refuses to pay it. But the restaurant has absolutely no right to call the cops. There is no such thing as a mandatory gratuity anywhere.
And oregondave, if I have amazing service from someone, I will often tip 25-30% on the check. I think that fun, entertaining waiters and waitresses deserve the extra compensation. If I have enough money to be eating out, I can afford to share it a little bit.

Probably many years for multiple thefts and avoiding the police and such. That is what you get for doing dumb things like this.
