I don't know if it's neat. I'm not saying it shouldn't have been posted, but when I think of the purpose of this site (entertainment) I can't help but feel like I'm looking at a sideshow.
This has nothing to do with foot binding except that it involves small feet. I once visited the Chinese theatre with a friend of mine and was shocked at the tiny tiny shoe prints of the some of the women who had left their impression there. I've always had "small" feet compared to the other women in my family, so it was pretty amazing the imprints of shoes I could have worn when I was eight years old.
Although, I'm guessing that should they have been born in that time and place, they would have still be subject to binding themselves. When you're striving for the smallest, the least, the youngest... there's only one way to go.
As someone who has witnessed abuse first hand, I can tell you that the psychological abuse is every bit as important to breaking a person down as the occasional violence that is used to back it up. I myself have been at the wrong end of a relentless barrage of degrading insulting language that was intended to break me down.
The thing is, that's harassment. It isn't about namby pamby "feelings," it's about creating a pervasive and inescapable atmosphere of ridicule and insecurity. I doubt it's as simple as calling someone an idiot in anger (note the use of the word "repeatedly").
I'm curious how they intend to distinguish it from other forms of anti-harassment laws and what the real world effects will be. Like the caption on the photo in the article says, "psychological violence" is a hard allegation to prove. Abusers are pretty circumspect, and unless it's recorded in some way, well. You know.
I'm sure THIS operation is legit, Alex, but that happens more than you realize. Skeazy porn operations and rapists/kidnappers sometimes pretend to be modeling agency scouts to lure in young women.
That said, the way they treat these girls like livestock IS undeniably creepy, and I say that as a lover of fashion. The "right" genetic mix? Um...
Anyway... these girls are taken away from their homes, and paid a lot of money, but what I'm really curious about is what happens to them after their "careers" are over? When the fashion world moves on to another hot "genetic mix," or they become too old? I'm guessing no one trains them how to invest.
I can never stress enough to people to spay and neuter their pets, but some people still insist on at least one litter before doing so. It doesn't help the animal, people. The cat/dog doesn't "calm down" as a result of having babies. If they "calm down" it's because they got older, not wiser. correlation =/= causation.
All you accomplish is creating more animals who need homes, and contribute to all the millions of perfectly adoptable pets being put down.
As a vegetarian, let me just tell you that animals are delicious, we are omnivorous ANIMALS, and animals eat other animals (I just think Americans eat too many).
That said, I'm sure this dish is absolutely revolting, but I see nothing particularly offensive about dressing up a dish one is about to consume anyhow.
So that's why they demolished that beautiful stone building! I was wondering about that. Oh well. Tall buildings are why I want to live in Portland anyway.
I once went to have dinner alone at McMennamins on Market st, and the hostess mistook the two men behind me as people I knew and tried to seat us together. We were so equally amused by the mistake that we went along with it. They turned out to be working on a building in the South Waterfront that included a water recycling system in the basement. It was cool.
Thanks, Frank!
Just my two cents.
