There's a Wikipedia entry for Rom Houben. The story is old (2006) but Houben's doctor Steven Laureys has just published a paper regarding misdiagnosis of coma: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2377/9/35
The paper doesn't mention facilitation. Nor does it mention communication, except as one measure in assessing vegetative state.

Not communicating. Watching the how quickly the "facilitator" uses the poor fellow's splinted finger to tap the keyboard, I'm convinced it's her doing the communicating, not him.
What's really sad is that the experts and the so-called doctor journalist just take this at face value. And I have to consider that this story is being promoted cynically right now just to inflame anti health care reform sentiment.
Just how long has this particular "facilitation" gone on? Who initiated it and why? How long did it take for the "facilitator" to produce communication and what's the supposed process (feeling micro muscle twitches or is there a psychic claim?) and who does the "facilitator" work for?

The article doesn't say that Gore is becoming a billionaire, or say that he will make anything like that. It says that businesses that his venture capital group have invested in may make billions over coming years and that the venture capital company's $72 million dollar investment may be returned several fold.
Last I checked, Gore was a private citizen and if he's willing to risk his money as a venture capitalist, he's entitled to profit from well placed investments. Just as those office holders who promoted "drill baby drill" are free to go back to work for the oil industry that they love so much.
I'm tired of seeing political posts on Neatorama. Stick to what you do best.

Looks like a flying katydid to me. Of course a fairy is a much more reasonable and sensible explanation. There are so many fairies in museum collections, after all. And flying insects are so uncommon.

That should be paleontologists having all the fun. Archaeologists study human history. Paleontologists study fossils.

"As it landed, the Hindenburg dispelled hydrogen to lessen its weight and land."
Let's see here. An airship becomes *lighter* in order to land? No. Venting hydrogen and replacing the volume light gas with air makes the ship heavier.

It's wrong on many levels, but the worst is that anesthesia is dangerous to small animals and it's more dangerous the longer it's used. We consider the risk for procedures like teeth cleaning for our cats and I'm sure take a fraction of the time the tattoo took.
I also wonder about the implications of the cat's much thinner skin going under the needle, and I wonder if the anesthetic was done by a skilled vet. I can't imagine a responsible vet being party to this.
The owner should be neutered, such stupidity should be removed from the gene pool.

Only a fool who thinks that The Matrix is a documentary could envision enslavement of humans as an energy resource. Ever hear of thermodynamics? You have to put more energy into feeding and maintaining your imagined human batteries than you'd get back - no matter how efficient the technology. And I'll bet the technology isn't very efficient. But I imagine that even an inefficient battery that doesn't require surgical replacement would be very desirable for pacemaker users and other implantable medical devices.
