Let's remember the name of the city referred to is in Spanish. The state was named by the Spanish as well. The land we live in (I live in San Diego County too) was taken by force for us to live in.

I spent a day working with a group of Mexican immigrants. They were the hardest working people I've ever spent a day with.

I think we should remember that we were a country born in revolution by tearing ourselves away from those who oppressed us. We also tore ourselves away from old ideas of monarchy and (to lesser extent) the privilege of birth.

We are also one of a handful of countries where we can have a radical shift of power without spilling blood.

This is a far from perfect nation...but this liberal would rather live here than anywhere else.

I have very mixed feelings about zoos. On the one hand, I would prefer that all animals run free in their natural habitat. On the other hand, some animals (pandas, for instance) are desperately endangered and will go extinct without zoos. Additionally, people viewing animals up close makes them more real and therefore more worthy of support.
This video shows that pandas are more than just poor, cute fuzzy animals that need our wuv and pity. They can think for themselves and take advantage of opportunities.
We also don't know what the enclosure is like off camera, so judging the zoo based on this is premature.
Also, if you don't like this site (and the things posted on it) stay away. Don't come here to tell us how awful we are for enjoying it.

I concur with the majority of the posts. My BoingBoing and Neatorama buttons are right next to each other on my browser bar. BB posts a lot of stuff and credits finding it to Neatorama.
While they have some overlap, they have very different feels.

Lion taming may be boorish and 19th century in mindset, but it is also very dangerous. If you have a cat, you also know how hard they are to tame. It's not easy to convince a 500 pound angry fur ball that it shouldn't kill you.
