Oh, I'm sure it can be done.
Maybe not quite like this, since this thing probably had some crazy fuel (and lots of it), but I've seen some really cool fireworks doing some amazing stuff.
Problem is, most of the really cool fireworks is mostly banned or at least severely restricted in this part of the world.

@Tim: Not a laser show. It was visible over such a long distance, it had to be higher up than any cloud-laser-thingy would be.
The consensus here in Norway is that it was a failed russian rocket launch. The russians do occasionally launch in this area, a successful one was launched only a few weeks ago, I believe.
The explanation one astronomer gave yesterday was that the rocket failed and spun out, and probably ignited its fuel in the air, giving the spiral pattern.

@felix: i don't think that is the case, actually. granted, i don't have much by way of hard facts to back it up, but the truth is, in those cold, socialist, atheist nations up north, the fear of the law isn't that great either. we have pretty lenient punishment compared to a lot of other countries.
so it must be another driving factor.
even the fear of shame is probably a bigger drive than the fear of the law.

@seth a: a "godly" person does no wrong because he fears the punishment of god.
here in scandinavia we (try) to do the right thing simply because it's the right thing, not out of fear.

i know which one of those two i'd leave my kid with.

Well, if you started back in 1800BC, you'd have a few thousand years to perfect a super-fast printing system before there was any actual Internet to print out... :-P
And what consequence would it have if you had been able to begin printing at the same time as the first pages started to show up? How long would you be able to keep up?

Supposedly, even Hitler was advised against sporting the toothbrush, simply because it was far from fashionable in Germany at the time. In other words, he made a fashion statement!

This is very neat indeed!
Most people tend to know either their way around nature or their way around education, but never both in this degree. I know I'd be more or less useless if I had to survive in nature.
She'll be some kind of super-woman.

I completely agree with some of the above commenters: let the shame be public.
I have been wanting to re-intorduce the stocks for some time now.
With most jails at or above capacity these days, why not let lesser offenders have the choice between a short jail time or public shaming?
Drunk driving or petty theft? One week in prison, or 5 weekends standing in a public square, with full name and offense on a poster around your neck.

What amazed me the most was how he (yes, I assume it's a he in this case) chose to attack the dog, even though it was at a distance.
He must have some real issues with dogs, I guess...
