Here's my favorite first line. I think it is the only line that ever made me exclaim, "Wow". I no longer vocalize upon reading it, but I still think it's the greatest. Anyway, here it is.

"As I walked through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place where was a Den, and I laid me down in that place to sleep: and, as I slept, I dreamed a dream."
