Bonfire night is often held at the weekend nearest the 5th if it's not on a weekend, having said that; here in Cambridge the organised local event was on the day.
It's more fun if you live in the country and have a big garden to have your own fire, at least that's how I remember it as a child.

I don't really think it has any political meaning to most people now (I'm half Irish and never heard them being described as martyrs), it's just a night for fun and baked potatoes!
