If teachers don't enforce the policies, they get fired. Considering almost all states are firing teachers right now, I'd be terrified about losing my job, too.

Administrators, seriously?! Zero-tolerance policies are just insane. We had a zero tolerance policy for rules in a certain section of the handbook at my high school, one of which was wearing boots with more than 20 "eyes". My friend glued googly eyes to her boots 21 on each. She was nearly suspended and was told that, technically, they could expel her.

This case reminds me of...

The mention of Father Damien is a travesty in writing. There's a museum dedicated to him in Hawaii, which I've visited, that produces some facts that are a little different that what the writers insinuated here. I mean, he's been officially recognized as a saint! Do you know how seldom that happens? To belittle his work there with inaccuracies or flippant "... made them as comfortable (and Christian)..." comments is just ridiculous.

Here's some factual correction for you: Father Damien arrived at the island in 1860, long after leprosy had been introduced by sailors and merchants visiting Hawaii, not settlers. He also didn't arrive as a "settler" but as a priest specifically sent to offer charity. King Kamehameha V exiled/quarantined the lepers. Since 8000 of them were sent there, they were hard-up for supplies and everything was disorganized.

The Catholic Church and the government of Hawaii refused to allow a priest into the leper colony for fear of infection, they just flat out refused. Father Damien begged his way in, and said "I make myself a leper with the lepers." He then lived with them for sixteen years, securing a steady supply of food (something that hadn't existed before), providing medical attention, and establishing schools. Even when he contracted leprosy, he remained active in the community and continued to help as best he could. Princess Liliuokalani was knocked speechless when she visited the colony.

If all you can muster about a man who sentenced himself to a death by leprosy is that he made the lives of Hawaiian lepers " more comfortable (and Christian)", then you're doing something pretty damn wrong.
