lulu-yes, it makes you more caring-when poor, there's not much choice-because you have to rely on others more, and thus develop social skills. Also, do you see many upper class types living in crowded situations, where social skills are a must? No. First thing any upper class type does, is remove themselves (if they were ever in) from such situations, and hang out with a small number of equally socially awkward upper class types. This has been done for a long time.

This is also on metafilter, where people hacked it in about five minutes. a story from my high school days: I got my edumaction at a greaser/banger school - we're talking FUBAR territory, big time. Library had a wee problem with book theft. So, school spent many many thousands of dollars on one of those electronic magnetic strip sensing devices. Keep in mind, this is in Saskatoon, well before teh infrawebby - these guys hacked it in about an hour or two. On their own. Started pranking the nerds, by pulling strips out, throwing them in their backpack so they'd be late for class. Some just elected to distract the librarian, and pass a book around outside the device to a friend.

Moral of the story? They can't make anything that someone can't hack.

As soon as I saw the video, I thought 'ultimate Mad Max, also, ultimate off road camping rig.'Incredibly cool, incredible design, incredibly useful, even the lines of it are just amazing. Something about it aesthetically appeals. Probably massively expensive. Hope the kid makes a nice pile of money on this!

Brilliant video! I've always loved Stephen Fry's humour - way back in the 'A Bit Of Fry and Laurie' days, where they played hell with language. Know the rules in order to break them? Horse puckey - we learn the rules from the moment we learn to talk. Girlalive - hey, hound people all you want - guess what happens? They keep writing and talking the way they want. Often at work, too. Look at rap - aint no way if grammar nazis had their way, that that woulda happened. Fry's simply arguing the joy and love of language, of creativity, of art. Write on!

I recall seeing an article on the whole lost sock phenomenon, so some guys took an old washing machine and a dryer apart. They found many socks wrapped around the turbine doohickey.

Not really a murphy candidate, but: in mechanical systems, eventually most everything becomes a whatchamacallit or a doohickey. This is especially true of simple, instantly recognizable things.

Well, Apple does have the ol' forbidden fruit with the bite out of it, as it's logo. So, being that I have a G3-what does that make me? My guess would be antiquated prole underachiever. Or an anacrhonism.
