Gas is easier. A cast iron grilling surface plus woodchips make the searing and flavor indistinguishable from charcoal.
BUT - Charcoal is better, environmentally speaking. Gas releases fossil fuel carbon into the atmosphere. Charcoal doesn't burn as clean, but the fuel is already part of the present-day carbon cycle.
