actually it's pretty neat. you can tell the time from one glace instinctively. the half opposite to 4 is completely shattered while you can almost see the numerals around the 4. even it it's 4:30 you'd be able to recognise the 2 less shattered numerals to see the time immidiately. i'd really love to have this clock...
they should be raised WITH those "conveniences" and then given a chance to choose how they want to spend their adulthood. otherwise the only reason they stay in the group is fear (of failing outside the group etc)

i had one as a kid 20 years ago. it also had a cap to provent it from opening while in a bag etc
