The photo itself would make a marvellous caption competition. I automatically wondered what they were all thinking, such are the expressions on the faces, but I am too much of a wuss to type them in here because they are way off the PC scale. :-)
I think that the new light is that pictures of off duty British soldiers in France at this time are very rare. Most pictures that we have are taken at home with uniforms buff and facial hair glistening! Either that or at the trenches. Off duty and in a French garden - not so many! These pictures show a fairly bedraggled lot, even though for sure they must have done their best to spruce themselves up before standing in front of the camera. Also, the picture of the black Tommy is incredibly rare - we know that black soldiers served in the British forces but pics of them are few and far between. Plus social histor - like the tattoo - how many WW1 soldier pics like that do you see? The sheepskin tops, and so on...
This is lovely. It's easy to knock kids like this but this shows what can be done with effort and heart and unambiguous personal involvement. This guy was born to teach and the kids, well, now they know that they were truly born to learn. This brought a real lump to my throat.
@ Skipweasel - yeah - I agree, it is very difficult to see a book destroyed. My own family had painful experiences of it in the 1930s. However, this is not destruction - it is renaissance. The book is read in a very different way, yes, but it survives. Books destroyed by malice and those that are destroyed because they are verboten (as such) are one thing. Those which will end up in the dump (possibly like these. Damn, no italics available) and are given a new lease of life. Yes. More. X
Oo, that's better....
May we date?
(Check the prediction in the blurb!)
Hurrah for the new genetically enhanced kidnets!
(ooops)
This is just vile. Here in the UK, we do civilised things like bread and dripping, sweetmeats and steak and kidnet pudding!
The average UK citizen would find this quite unappetizing - simply NOT enough saturated fat.
