While I agree that the prevalence of cosmetic surgery in Asia (as well as the age at which some get surgeries) is disturbing, I disagree that it is in an effort to look more "western." Most Asians who get cosmetic surgery is not trying to look white or western; they do it in order to look more attractive. Large eyes, smaller/more defined noses, and smaller chins are standards of beauty in various cultures and not just in the East. These standards (including white, "pure" skin) were around in Asia way before the assimilation of western culture.
Until I left for college, my parents gave me $20 for every A I received on my report card. So if I received straight A's, I would get $120-$140...a large sum for a kid.
I don't think it was bribing. I see it more as a rewards/positive reinforcement system. I worked, because I was a straight-A student and got into a top-tier college.
Thanks for linking to my blog! I really appreciate it, since Neatorama has been one of my favorite sites for a long time.
However, the link you published seems to be broken - the correct link should be http://www.geekinheels.com/2008/08/05/top-5-star-wars-designs-inspired/
The name says it all: I'm a geek (computers, gadgets, programming, video games, web design, useless trivia) in heels (makeup, designer handbags, NYC social scene). I've linked to Neatorama many times in my weekly Wednesday feature, "Hump Day Hook-Ups" where share the 10 most interesting things I've read on the web that week.
