My Dad was a sign painter from the 1920's til the 1990's. Hardly ever used a pattern, freehanded everything. I would watch him do detailing like this all the time. Steady hand and lots of practice. Glad to know things like this still exist. A lot of it has been replaced by stickers.

I think they're farrier's(horseshoeing) tools for cleaning hooves, etc.

At my work there are a few folk from different areas of Africa. One of the men who works on my hall seemed to be adjusting quite well and it was fun to pick out the British terms he used on occasion(plaster for band-aid) One day however he came to ask for a good butcher shop where he could buy horses hooves so that he could make gelatin for his children. He was quite surprised and pleased that he could just prepare some Jello and on top of it all it would already be flavored.

Yeah, I don't think I'd pay money for that. My Dad for the most part always sharpened his pencils with his pocket knife. It was quicker and easier than trying to find a sharpener when you needed one plus he always carried a pocket knife, and a sharp one at that. Sharpening a pencil by hand was always helpful for him since he was a sign painter and that way he could get a broad pencil stroke or fine line right then and there.

Back in the old timey times, in the 1970's, I went on a cruise. The "bathroom" was like the reverse of the first cartoon. If you sat on the toilet and looked straight up, you were staring at the shower head. Great use of space but not what I was expecting after watching the "Love Boat", lol.

I think Dowdy is not a time related issue. Dowdy to me is clothing that is not flattering or appropriate no matter what time frame it falls in to.
I think there are are also timeless pieces of clothing, say a well cut suit. These after a time to me seem to turn into "Vintage".
