Top Gadgets of 2019

It’s pretty much inevitable that you’d come across an article like this as the year draws to an end. Not to mention it’s the season where some adults make frantically searching online for ‘the best gift to give a loved one’ look like a sport.

The top suggested tech products of 2019 are here. And sitting at #1 is the eyeglasses that has music playing and wireless calling capabilities and looks like it came straight out of a modern spy movie. Also making it to the top are: a Robot Unicorn that helps you learn coding, a ultralight drone that can technically fit in the palm of a hand, and a cordless vacuum that's slightly cheaper than its rival counterpart.

‘Snake? Snaaake!’ Deadly Eastern Brown Snake is Almost Too Sneaky

Can you spot the snake in the photo? Andrew’s Snake Removal, from Queensland, Australia, posted this photo on Facebook with the caption:

Ok let's see who's got sharp eyes and who can spot the snake. Bonus bragging rights if you can name the species as well👍🐍fire away.

It took some commenters more than 10 minutes of staring at the photo before giving up, while others were quick to identify the camouflaged, eastern brown snake in the middle-right section. Honestly, the brown twigs lying around just make it all the more perplexing!

Surprise! The original poster uploaded this close-up photo of the snake peeping from the grass. Were you able to spot it in less than 5 minutes?

Trite or Contrite? How to Show You’re Sorry Without Actually Saying the Word

We’ve all been there. Some more than others have a tendency to overuse (and even abuse) the word ‘sorry’ in situations where it’s not exactly necessary. So, how can we determine when it’s more appropriate to issue an apology or just take a moment to quietly and honestly self-reflect? Such decisions can be crucial, especially in corporate or organizational settings.

According to the post,

There’s a time and a place to apologize. But if you’re not at fault, here’s what you should do instead.

Sean O’Meara, coauthor of The Apology Impulse: How Business Ruined Sorry and Why We Can’t Stop Saying It, gives us some suggestions. For the full story, read the original article here.

Dog’s Barking Helps Save Sleeping Family From Fire

A family of five in Savannah, Georgia, USA, were alerted to a fire in their house last Friday by their household pet, Sammy.

A dog named Sammy was being credited with sensing danger and, as a result, helping to save a Georgia family of five from a fire that caused extensive damage to their home.
Savannah firefighters said the household pet's loud barking alerted the five family members to the raging fire in the rear of the home early Friday. They had been sleeping.
“They all escaped unharmed,” Savannah Fire Rescue said.

Good boy, Sammy.

Coffee Shop Employee Pranks Customer

How would you respond to a rude customer? A thread about a highschooler who works weekends at a coffee shop has gained popularity on Reddit’s AITA. According to this recent post, the employee thought it would be a fun idea to get back at rude customers by asking the shift manager to pretend-fire her after a hot headed customer made a complaint about the coffee not being hot enough.

Redditors on the r/AITA thread generally had mixed judgements on the situation, with some saying she was wrong for causing a big fuss and being unprofessional, others criticizing the customer and justifying her prank, and still there were those who said both the employee and customer suck.

Are You Reading Your Blood Pressure Wrong?

Blood pressure is the “force of blood flowing through your blood vessels,” according to the American Heart Association. It’s best to have your blood pressure checked by a health professional in order to know if you have high blood pressure or hypertension, which may be indicative of a potential health issue.

And when you do get checked, it’s crucial to have a correct reading to prevent possibly getting misdiagnosed.

It’s probably not your doctor’s fault. Blood pressure is temperamental. Lots of factors can result in an off measurement, meaning you can potentially end up with a misdiagnosis. “People might get overtreated or undertreated if their blood pressure isn’t measured correctly in the office,” says Jordana Cohen, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. In other words, you could be put on meds you don’t need or prescribed a dose higher or lower than necessary. Follow this blood pressure checklist to make sure you walk away with the right reading.

Thankfully, there are tips on how you can ensure your blood pressure reading is as accurate as possible before, during, and after a check-up. Read the original post here.

Dogs on the “Nice” List This Year

Okay, let’s face it, dogs are simple animals: they need food, water, shelter, (preferably) a mate and occasionally a bone to chase. Anything other than that may as well be a treat. But today, especially in the cities, we see that they’re one of the most domesticated and humanized animals in existence (on par with cats and other household pets).

There’s really nothing wrong with showering your dog with care and attention, don’t get me wrong. Let’s just keep in mind that your doggo probably has no idea what Christmas is… other than what they gather from instinctive cues during changes in the season. But who am I to ruin the festive fun? Some people just enjoy setting up elaborate photoshoot sets or dressing up their dogs in (hopefully comfortable) costumes. The Internet sure is one place for pet owners to show off their efforts.

Baby Yoda Memes to Brighten Your Day

The Mandalorian premiered on Disney+ in November 2019 and Internet users can’t seem to get enough of one of the characters known affectionately as “Baby Yoda” or also “The Child.”

Unsurprisingly, in true Twitterverse fashion, users have come up with a fresh set of viral memes. They took a screen capture of Baby Yoda sipping from a cup and inserted their own creative captions for the photo, with one Twitter user calling it “the new “tea” meme of 2020.” These posts have garnered hundreds of thousands of Twitter engagements in total.

This tweet perfectly sums up how I’m feeling.
