SNL Actors vs. the Famous People They’re Portraying

The actors of Saturday Night Live have a knack for creating satirical celebrity impressions, sometimes coming up with monologues that’ll leave you in stitches. Though not always accurate, these impressions are pretty hilarious and their hair and make-up department really does deliver. Here are 21 side-by-side photos of SNL actors and the famous people they’re playing, most of which are political figures.

Gotta love Tina Fey’s spot-on impression of Sarah Palin.

Now Hiring: The Queen of England’s Social Media Director

The Royal Household posted a job opening with the heading “Head of Digital Engagement.” Apparently, they’re looking for tech-savvy candidates experienced in digital communication content strategy and digital platform usage. The job description sounds pretty normal enough, aside from the fact that you’ll be working for the longest-reigning British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

Apart from reporting to the queen (or, more likely, a chain of command that eventually makes its way up to the queen), the job sounds pretty typical. The head of digital engagement for the Royal Household will work Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours per week, and be paid 45,000-50,000 pounds (about $60,000-$67,000) per year depending on experience.

Do you meet the minimum qualifications? There is still time to apply, though obviously the demand for this job is very high and slots may be running out soon.

According to The New York Times, 200 people had already applied for the job as of Friday, December 13, but if this sounds like your dream job, you have until Christmas Eve to submit your application.

Blind Man Gets Thousands of Responses from Online Community of Dog Lovers

Stephen Shkuratoff from Alberta, Canada, may have a blind condition but that’s not stopping his deep love for dogs. A member of the online community, Dogspotting Society, where users can share heartwarming dog photos and stories, Shkuratoff posted this request on the Facebook page:

“I love being a member of this group!” … “I am blind and was hoping to ask for more dog descriptions. Personality traits are more helpful than colors. Like how soft the dog is, for example. Bonus as always for dogs full of kisses and snuggles. Thanks for making me feel included. Hope no one minds me asking for descriptions a lot recently.”

Over 2,000 responses came in from fellow dog owners and they sure did not disappoint. The visual descriptions are as endearing as they are thoughtful and help to inspire more appreciation for our loyal pet companions and other gifts we may take for granted.

“All these descriptions are so lovely and I am very thankful,” he said after reading through the overwhelming number of responses.

Most Watched YouTube Music Videos from the 1980s to 2010s

The number to beat is 6.5 billion for the highest views on a YouTube music video from the 2010s. “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee has achieved certified video viral gold along with other leading artists like Ed Sheeran, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, Psy, Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, Katy Perry, and OneRepublic.

But if you’re looking for musical hits outside of this decade, YouTube has got you covered with their list of every top music video from the 1980s onwards.

Guns N' Roses reigns over both the '80s and '90s, thanks to "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "November Rain," both of which have garnered more than 1 billion views. Coming in at Nos. 2 and 3 on the '80s list are A-ha's still-infectious "Take on Me" and Cyndi Lauper's iconic "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," while Nirvana's classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and The Cranberries' gritty smash "Zombie" were the second and third most-watched of the '90s.

The Weird and Wonderful Stinkhorn Mushroom

Ready for some fascinating FUNgi biology? These are stinkhorn mushrooms from the Phallaceae family of fungi. Aptly named for their foul-smelling stench and hornlike shape, stinkhorns are gasteroid fungi, meaning they create spores inside their bodies rather than outside like most other mushrooms. Flies are attracted to the stinkhorn’s malodorous and gelatinous spore-containing substance called the gleba, which they feast on then distribute all over the forest floor.

The stinkhorn mushroom can often be found in tropical areas.

Japanese Lantern Festival Inspired by Bamboo

The Chikuraku is a 3-day festival celebrated each year by thousands in Taketa City (Oita Prefecture) in Kyushu, Japan.

Rather than let their bamboo forests fall into disrepair, the city came up with the idea of carrying on with their felling and using the bamboo in an annual lantern festival. It began with just 400 and has grown, gradually, to 20,000 bamboo lanterns.

Learn more about how economic changes in Taketa City’s bamboo industry marked the birth of this beautiful display of lights.

Video of Bailey the Dog Dancing to Reggaeton Goes Viral

Wendy Berenguer uploaded this video of herself and a dog named Bailey in what looks like them dancing along together to a beat playing in the kitchen. And soon enough, it went viral. I mean, c’mon, it’s a dancing dog!

she shared the video of the seemingly impromptu kitchen dance party on her Facebook page, so the world could see the dog’s impressive skills. In the video, the dog can be seen sitting up and twisting from side to side along with the beat. When Bailey notices that it’s being filmed, it pauses for a moment, adjusts its position like it knows its best angles, and resumes shaking its tail like its a back-up dancer for Rosalía or Romeo Santos.

Dancing and pets could make a great combo for a simple yet fun exercise and stress-relieving activity, according to this article:

Similarly, dancing has been found to reduce the risk of disability and dementia and an excellent form of exercise. That means that if you are lucky enough to have a dog that knows how to throw down to sweet tune you should be in pretty good shape.

Just watching this video of them having fun helps to lower my stress levels.

Simple Life Hack For Cleaning Your Shower Head

Shower head not working as great as it was before? Here are some budget-friendly solutions that don’t require hiring a plumber or buying hardware equipment. What you’ll need:

A zip-close storage bag, rubber band, water and either CLR [calcium, lime and rust-removing] cleaning solution or plain white vinegar -- plus one hour…

You might experience this problem because of natural wear and tear.

The problem stems from hard water, which has high levels of dissolved solids -- primarily calcium and magnesium -- according to the Water Quality Association. Over time, these chemicals bond with the metal and plastic in your shower head, causing a buildup that appears as crusty bits around the water spouts.
As this plumbing plaque accrues over time, the holes start to close up and water has to work harder to shoot out. If ignored, eventually it can stop up your spout completely. Shower filters are one way of preventing the problem…

Alternatively, this quick hack can save you both time and money. You can read the full post over at cnet.

LOL-Worthy Dad Tweets That'll Give You Secondhand Embarrassment

These wisecracking dads being themselves on the Internet are the 'dad joke' meme equivalents of the digital age. In 24 posts, here are moments that made the Internet collectively facepalm or laugh out loud at these jokes, or rather anti-jokes. Wholesome, simplistic, and often pleasantly unexpected, some kinds of humor (and people) never change.

What’s more is that Merriam-Webster recently added the informal term as a dictionary entry:

a wholesome joke of the type said to be told by fathers with a punchline that is often an obvious or predictable pun or play on words and usually judged to be endearingly corny or unfunny

It’s interesting to know how jokes become culturally considered as dad jokes, without the stereotypical notion of being told by a literal father or father figure.

Butter Soft than Solid, I’d say

How many ways to soften butter can you think of? Off the top of my head, I can name the lazy cold-butter-on-really-hot-toast style, the precarious microwave method (unless done right), and well… that’s the extent of my experience from preparing butter on toast for breakfast. But there’s plenty more uses for melting butter other than breakfast (as I just learned), in particular for baking cakes and cookies:

If it’s not soft enough, the butter won’t cream well with the sugar (frequently the first step of baking recipes); it simply won’t get to the right light and fluffy consistency. And that could result in dense cake layers that fall flat. On the other hand, if your butter is too soft, your cookies will spread out all over your pan.

These butter-ficionados made it their mission to find out which softening methods work best and how long do they take. Oh, and by ‘softened’ they mean that the butter “easily bends without breaking and gives slightly when pressed.”
