Thanks if and yugosakimi - I have to shamefully admit I am responsible for that mistake. I spent too much time looking at the graphic and then wrote the post very quickly before going to a meeting. I looked at the value numbers, not number in circulation, and fouled it up.

Is there any way to correct an error in your own upcoming queue post?

@Woogie - Shelter costs are likely not included (even at a very low estimate of $10k/year for housing, that's $180k over 18 yrs). Perhaps they include some incremental adjustment for the increased housing costs for having a larger home, but definitely not the total. I am also betting food. How is it cheaper for the government to pay for the mother to stay at home? Cheaper for who?

@Babycakes - How does this show why America is so in debt? What percentage of your income do you think is reasonable to give to your children? According to those stats, the middle class is paying 12-22% of their income in child costs (ignoring taxes). As long as you have a reasonable number of kids then it isn't an issue.

I haven't enjoyed an e-mail exchange so much since the guy that tried to pay a bill with a picture of a spider (http://www.neatorama.com/2008/11/09/im-paying-you-with-this-picture-of-a-spider/).

I suspect Gabe is NEVER going to see that $500 again. Although I bet Gary would be hilarious if he eventually ends up in small claims court. Maybe he will try to lock himself in a bathroom stall.

This is not impressive at all if you have ever been to "The Other Place" in Meadville, PA (small town bar also known as the Penny Bar). Every surface is covered in pennies, creating penny flags, maps, clocks and miniature Lincoln and Jefferson memorials made out of pennies. Since it is illegal to destroy US pennies, the owner used Canadian pennies in cases where he needed to cut corners into the pennies to make the designs look right. The only pictures I could find are here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2205193000

There is no doubt this is really cool example of engineering. However, when you see it in person you're somewhat surprised by how small it is! It is not intended for the large river barges you may be familiar with in the US.

The canals used to be connected via a lock system, but those were filled in during the 1930s because they weren't used. I wonder how they justified that cost. Reminds me of US projects like the various "Bridge to Nowhere" projects proposed in Alaska over time.

Reminds me of the photoshop contest a while back where the goal was to hide elephants in plain sight:www.neatorama.com/2008/07/03/how-to-hide-an-elephant/.

I find the stats on the upcoming queue to be rather interesting. I wonder what percentage of the total posts to the upcoming queue came from the top four and if most people who post only get 1/3 of their posts promoted.
