I think one could certainly question the doctor's professionalism and I would certainly understand if he was disciplined by whatever body licenses him. A lawsuit seems over the top.

Obviously if they asked for the pictures then they were looking to fuel a lawsuit and this is the only thing they came up with.

All that being said - what kind of knucklehead would have provided photos that were not medically relevant?

I think folks are confusing the western hemisphere with western culture. Western culture actually refers to cultures of a European descent.

@Krelsey - I didn't like the term WEIRD either, and then I realized it was being used as an acronym for Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic people. The whole point of the article is to point out that published data in this area is largely skewed toward one common heritage. Behavioral science literature is dominated by WEIRD people (especially American's), the typical data published is often actually atypical of the world as a whole. The fact the acronym spells weird is just a pun that points toward the point of the whole article.

Thanks Randall - I got lazy and checked out the link, but not his site. There is a link showing pictures taken during the process, which is cool to see.

Cool. I wish the article said whether or not the each work was a single solid piece of wood, or multiple pieces.

Similar concept, and one of my favorite art pieces in Washington, DC, is Ghost Clock by Wendell Castle at the Renwick Gallery.

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable response actually. I blame the police reaction on the dude that was carrying it around. Yes, it is not a real sword. No, that does not mean you can carry it around in a way that makes it appear real without accepting that you might freak some people out. Looking at the product page, I can definitely understand why someone would freak out.

Reminds me of some of the posts that got me hooked on reading neatorama every day. I had actually contacted Bathsheba about doing a piece, but it didn't work out.

The comparison has some major holes. The destruction of rain forests is an act that is driven by economic factors and is intentional (note that intentional does not necessarily imply justifiable). The choice could be made to stop the destruction and even reverse some of it.

The oil spill is an accident that at best will have only regional affects on food supply and animal life. Imagine the worst case scenario. Had BP not been able to stop the flow for years, the impact could include destroying the underwater ecosystem throughout the Gulf and Caribbean and contaminating the food supply throughout the North Atlantic.

lulu hit it exactly. He made an educated guess, but it was still a guess. If he were $1 over then he wins nothing, so really he was just lucky that he hadn't paid closer attention to the length of the trailer.

I hope that they really did memorize prices by watching the show, but there seem to be too many coincidences on that show for there not to have been some extra cheating on the side.

I have to admit that I have always been fascinated with the rights extended to Native Americans. As a people group they were certainly treated harshly by settlers, but the continuous tax shelter/reparations extended to this group are pretty elaborate compared to what has been extended to descendants of slavery for example. I would think the special tax status could be phased out over time given that the worst offenses against the group occurred generations in the past.

It is actually rather surprising just how disgusting paper money can smell. I worked in a convenience store in high school and there were times that we would spray bills with Lysol. Some customers, for various reasons, did not shower regularly and when combined with not having a wallet then the money can get pretty foul.
