"Why South Korea is making an issue of this wasn't the point of my reply to your comment."
Then why reply at all?
The naval flag came before the war flag, American warships were busy attacking Japan during the nineteenth century.
Let us imagine you are correct. Why would a naval flag be flown at the Olympics? Did the US of A fly a naval ensign at Salt Lake City? No. We did not.
South Korea isn't thinking about the Olympics. They are using this protest to bring attention to last year's naval maneuvers and Korea abandoning the settlement.
Typical Neatorama journalism. Such as misleading photograph accompanying story or leaving out a few facts to heighten the hilarity or disbelief.

Mr Santos should consult Wikipedia for he is mistaken. And Mr Santos sidesteps my questions.
Why is South Korea suddenly making an issue of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force flag?
Why would a navy flag be flown at the Olympics?

The flag pictured is not the "Rising Sun". It is the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force flag.

A navy flag. Flown on ships. That is why sailors are marching with the flag.

Why would a navy flag be flown at the Olympics?

South Korea is confusing WWII war flag with the navy flag. South Korea never complained about the JMSDF flag until 2011.

This story is two weeks old. Why dredge up partially accurate material?
