My late husband's hobby was growing as many varieties of brugmansia as he could find. "Angel's Trumpets" is the common name for both Datura and Brugmansia, although they are not the same genus (however, they used to be thought so). Datura is more of an herb, and Brugmansia is a shrub or a tree (they can grow to 20 ft high in the right climate). Both plants are extremely toxic and some municipalities actually prohibit the purchase, sale or cultivation of either or both Brugmansia and Datura. But the blossoms are exquisitely gorgeous, so it's worth the risk (at least my husband thought so).
It's not just movie theaters, either. I run the box office for a small professional theater company, and I hate the fact that we have to ask people to please turn off their cell phones and "no texting" during performances! But, believe it or not, people do have to be reminded -- can't they understand about not interrupting live actors on stage, not distracting them? It's amazing how self-centered the general public has become, but theatergoers? You'd think they would be better educated as to protocol! Personally, I'd like to see cellphones banned in restaurants, too.
For almost 20 years, I was fortunate enough to correspond via snail mail with a terrifically gifted artist friend who liberally illustrated his letters (written in gorgeous cursive, too) with wonderful sketches of whatever he was writing about -- needless to say, I treasure them (alas, we mostly talk on the phone now).
It’s worth nothing (should be "noting", not nothing) that the orchestra in the movie . . . etc. in the section called "The End Result."
Otherwise, great article (and I caught the error calling Stokowski a composer instead of a conductor, too).
