Sadly, it doesn't take that much effort to set up armies of bots to create fake reviews and recommendations. Any talented hacker can create a platoon of sock puppets to further his (or her) products, causes, etc. The real challenge is to tell the humans from the phonies.
A lot of people who end up with certain items stuck in the Hershey Highway claim that they slipped or fell and those items ended up getting lodged there. ER personnel know better.

There are a lot more reasons, such as greedy merchants shaming you for not spending enough, religious bugnuts getting in your face about "Jesus is the reason for the season!" (in fact, they stole it from pagans who were celebrating the Winter Solstice), crappy holiday Muzak, lousy weather, stupid holiday specials and episodes - I could go on and on and on.
Years ago my family began the tradition of "ungiving." Instead of exchanging presents, we donate to charity in each other's names. Sometimes we pick a charity or cause, and everybody gives to that one organization. This year it's helping victims of the California wildfires.
