I am a descendant of Grace Garman, a young woman who worked as a telegraph operator in Johnstown. On the day of the flood, she stayed behind, sending out messages until the flood waters took her. My great-grandfather and grandfather went to Johnstown (from Berlin, PA) to look for Grace's body (I believe without success). But while wading through the mud, my grandfather kicked up a china figurine of a little girl reading to her cat. It was completely unharmed and holds a place of pride in my china cabinet now.
