The pace is slower there, the sky is bluer, the air and water fresher, cost of living lower, and the crime lower. The grid of easy access roads make it a wonderland for exploration.
A bit of history that is never mentioned is that the development company that ended up with the majority stock was hugely invested in silver and, when the silver market crashed in the early 80's, it went bankrupt overnight. Instead of a city that was never built it became the city that had to support the enormous infrastructure put in place and survive. Not only did the city survive, it grew, and continues to do so.
Often overlooked is that the largest employer is Edwards AFB which is the cutting edge test base for flight and rocket engines. It is just to the south of the city. Others are the two area school districts, both the Hyundai/Kia and Honda test tracts, and companies servicing the civilian space industry just to the west of us.
It is a full service city of 14,000 - 15,000 people with 15 eating establishments, four schools, medical services, several parks (one of which has a 22 acre lake), two golf courses, a pro-indie baseball team, a tortoise preserve, a gem of a state park literally in its back yard (Red Rock Canyon State Park), some of the best birding in the southwest US (Over 350 species have officially been recorded.), serious nature and all that life in it that can be explored with or with out a motor, and that is within two hours of both downtown LA and the midst of the high Sierras. (Yes, the 60 bed hotel is very popular and is booked full every night. Reserve at least 2-3 wks ahead.)
