Yes, you can certainly recreate a device a lot more cheaply if someone else has done all the research, development, and optimization for you. Instead of using their patent, start from scratch and see how long it takes you.
And speaking of patents, the nice lady has basically admitted she copied the device out of someone's issued (and presumably enforceable patent). Depending on what the granted claims cover, I imagine it would be VERY hard for her to avoid a finding of willful infringement. Oh, and potentially contributory infringement, since she's encouraging others to do the same.
"This fight promises to be a Homeric duel between two feline titans, a gladiatorial struggle, pitting Meowhammad Ali against "Catnip" Joe Frazier. These Connoisseurs of the Canvas, these Mavens of Martial Arts, seek to establish, once and for all, who deserves to wear the collar of the Heavyweight Champion..."
If you want gas-type convenience, plus BETTER smoke flavor than you can get with charcoal, try a Traeger pellet grill.
At high temps, they grill food. At medium temps, you can roast beautifully. But at low temps they are a full-on smoker and produce the tastiest, smokiest, most succulent barbecue you've ever had.
They are very expensive, but you will NEVER go back to either gas OR charcoal.
That was awesome. And I mean that in the most literal sense: I am in awe that someone would go to that much trouble to administer a delayed remote-detonated guilt trip. Well-played, sir. Well-played.
The only way they could generate light continuously for 12 years, without any energy input, is if it was using a radioactive source. They say it is "lead-free and non-radioactive", but their own patent application reveals that they use a radioactive gas (almost certainly tritium) encapsulated with a phosphor. They say the radioactive gas can't escape the microsphere. I wonder how much wear and tear the material can take before tritium starts escaping.

Of course, I took Logic in college, so I had an unfair advantage.
