Yeah, it's neat, but it always cracks me up when I see a swimming pool right on the beach... Maybe it's just that it's not so common in the U.S. As a kid, I used to enjoy trips "down the shore" (guess what US state I hail from...) and there were never any pool visits involved. Pools were plentiful, but artificial, a ersatz ocean without the nice sand and waves. A trip to the shore was always (and remains) a better deal than a dunk in the pool, even a rather jumbo one like this. I can see the appeal of pools if you are far from the ocean, but it's pretty lame to hang out in one when you've got reality so nearby.

Wow, nice stuff. He clearly has a very mathematically inclined mind. I wonder if he makes quantitative calculations to aid in the designs or he just (somehow!) does it all intuitively?

I've read all the stories in the Holmes canon and I have to agree with the other posters about "Thomas Watson". John is usually used, but I'm pretty sure it does say James at least once. Thomas? Never that I can recall.

There are a couple famous Thomas Watsons (different people):
1. either Alexander Graham Bell's assistant "Mr. Watson, come here! I want you!"
2. or it's the guy who founded IBM, Thomas J. Watson.

But why? Delivering motive force via a propeller is a stupid way to move a car. Aircraft do it because tires don't grip air too well. Land-based vehicles are not so constrained. Dumb.

Climate change is real -- but's it's been happening for millions of years, man or no man.

How self-absorbed we are to declare that *exactly* the way things are right now (or fifty years ago, or whatever) is optimal. Get a grip folks, the earth's climate has NEVER be stable and we have nothing to do with it.

All these schemes do is waste a lot of money, energy, and intellectual resources better spent elsewhere. Bah.

That is the fruitest thing I ever heard. Queen Victoria is turning in her grave seeing how low her nation has sunk from its powerful past. First the banning of schoolyard conkers games and now this. Please someone stop the pansifying of Britain.

I used to work with an engineer who was a former Soviet missle battery officer. That was a favorite quip of his as well.

He also recounted the best way to score well on Army artillery tests was "not to have best aim, but rather to give vodka to man who keeps score".

PS - gotta love the term "chav" Skipweasel used. It's almost entirely unknown in the U.S., but sounds much a lot more polite than "urban white trash".

Yo yo... is Ali G in da house?

oh, this is so silly... People get bitten by lots of dog breeds including mixed breeds. How does one possibly define the "dangerous" ones by breed alone? You could outlaw pitbulls and Rottweilers and then somebody will have a mongrel that is a quarter each Pitbull, Rottweiller, Chow, and German Shepherd chew the face off a kid and then be in the clear. And what about dogs of uncertain lineage? Shall all dogs be DNA tested to try to determine their ancestry?

All stupid proposed laws like this do is further remove people from individual responsibility. Instead of blaming the dog (or its breed), blame the owners. Prosecute them mercilessly for vicious attacks on the part of their pets. Sure some otherwise "nice people whose nice dogs went nuts" will get tossed in the klink, but it's the only manageable way to control the risk.

There are a bunch of wonderful Hine images on shorpy.com as well.

It's fine to all pat ourselves on the back about how wonderful the world is without child labor, but remember, child labor is alive and well outside the Western world. There is a reason that the shoes we where are so inexpensive... Kids are still doing all the things they did in Hine photos (same ages and working conditions as well) only now it is in Red China, Vietnam, Honduras, Africa and a host of other places. The only difference is that the US factories where this used to take place have long been shuttered and we just import the same stuff.
