The rights were never "sold", only licenced.
The family successfully won a court battle just a few years ago when they challenged DC to prove ownership was signed over to them.
The family won a seriously huge amount of money for retrospective use of Superman over the years including the movies, cartoons and comic books.
The original producers of "Smallville" left the show to produce the latest Superman feature, but it got put on the backburner because of the court case.
Now that it's settled, the project that was supposed to take place 3 years ago has just started production in Vancouver.

I worked on "Andromeda", created by the Star Trek folk.
They told me to look closely at the door id's as they walk through the corridors.
Some of them are annotated, "GNDN".
It stands for "Goes Nowhere. Does Nothing.", basically saying it's just a set-piece and non-functional.
Funny how these plates co-opted that part.

Most of Montreal's Metro is based on a roller coaster concept.
The track dips down to pick up speed then ascends to use gravity to slow the train as it nears the next station.
It uses neumatic/bus tires on wood "tracks" instead of train wheels, providing a smoother ride.
As the train slows to a station, it engages flywheels located in the walls of the train to slow the train to a stop. You can hear them spinning! The flywheels are re-engaged to get the car rolling again with the downhill supplying the speed.
It's an extremely energy efficient system.
Not only that, but it's computer controlled so you can stand at one particular spot every time and the doors will stop and open there. Every time.
TTC should be taking notes....
