As they note in the actual article, the problem isn't that people are socially *isolated*, but that the social contacts they have aren't meaningful ("social poverty.")This really seems to indicate to me that the real problem has to do with people not being able to spend anywhere near enough time forming genuine friendships. COULD it have something to do with the fact that 25 years ago, people didn't have to work ALL the time to try to make ends meet? (shakes 8-Ball) "Signs point to maybe!"

I like the idea, but this:

Mobile readers instantly see new chapters as they are added, often adding comments about the direction they think a novel should take.

There's nothing new about it. At all. It's the nature of fanfic, and it's been going on for a LONG time.

As always, I'm the wet blanket pointing out the ridiculous leaps in logic required to pretend that any of this is scientific, has evidence backing it up, has anything to do with empirical fact, etc etc etc.... :P

What nobody seems to be talking about is the difference between *income* and *wealth*. When you don't have to pay taxes, a 275% increase in income-- as large as it is-- pales next to the increase in wealth. The capital gains tax is now zero, and was miniscule for years before that. If a certain percentage of your *income* is made up of capital gains and capital gains distributions-- and if it's a large enough percentage in relation to your earned income from work-- your overall tax burden will be ZERO on everything. Not only the portion that's capital gains, but absolutely every cent you made during the year from any source whatsoever.

This fact is skillfully concealed and never publicized. If anyone doesn't believe me, go and get a 1040 form with all the applicable schedules (especially Schedule D) and work it out by plugging in the numbers. Keep trying higher capital gains, lower earned income. You'll find out the truth.

What happened eleven years ago, the LAST time we had a budget surplus?? Hmm mm mm, I just don't know...

I just CAN'T imagine...

Could it be.... Bill Clinton was president???

Not that he'll ever get credit for it.

Huh. I think we do lawn care for that house, actually. (It's a rental.) If so, I can't say anything except that it's a very cute neighborhood, but there were these crazy neighbors constantly complaining about people in that house. Which does make me share dtaylor404's suspicions a bit, I must say.

FROM the ARTICLE:

“This is a private company, but it is a public service,” said Seth Solomonow, a spokesman for the DOT.

“The company has to comply with all applicable laws.”
The Transportation Department said that the B110 had not been granted any exceptions to anti-discrimination laws.

That's it. That's the end of the story. This is not about religious freedom or discrimination; this is about a law which everyone has to follow. If this becomes something which is not a public service, then people can do what they want. The bus wasn't even *marked* as a segregated service!! Neither was the bus stop. Why is anybody arguing about this??

You know, I'm always the spoilsport who points this kind of thing out, but this Richard Dawkinsesque "selfish gene" argument is not well-supported science according to, well, lots of scientists who I would rate far, far above Richard Dawkins. Most notably Stephen Jay Gould, who made some wonderful arguments against it in *The Structure of Evolutionary Theory*. Niles Eldridge too, as well as Richard Lewontin. And the cricket argument just doesn't work without the "selfish gene" theory having validity (which according to actual evidence, it really doesn't. The popular is not always the true!)

I don't know. The main problem about this is that it's going to encourage all the crazy people who believe in "quantum consciousness." (laces up running shoes!) :)

Rhododendrons are horribly poisonous, but they're in everybody's yard around here. I wonder how many people know just how deadly they are. I don't think I'd have them in a yard with little kids, personally.
