Extracurricular activities are important but... do not let everything they do end in a competition. So many places that offer lessons in things end the course with a competition. Swimming, horseback riding, ice skating, &c. Let the kid try something without the pressure. And for goodness sake, don't run out and buy the kid all the top of line gear until you and the kid are certain this is something they want to pursue. A friend of mine pays for a storage locker that holds all her now 30yo daughter's stuff, from ice skates to a kayak. Things she never did again after finishing the beginner's class.
