I wonder if there are 100 Americans who could do half as well filling in the English shires. Or even England, Scotland and Wales? What about Europe? Way too many Americans are incredibly ignorant about the world they live in.

The principal at one of the schools where I taught banned Bermuda shorts, so a bunch of the guys got together and showed up in short skirts. She almost had a heart attack, and most of the teachers had a great laugh. Their premise, of course, was that girls could wear short skirts, and since they couldn't wear shorts, they, too, would wear skirts. At first she was determined to suspend every one of the guys, but realized that was not feasible. Eventually, she caved on the shorts.

The Circus Vargas staged their animals in the parking lot of a shopping center near us. The elephants were staked out. Our youngest was crazy about elephants, and she spent ages looking at them and talking to them. One of them really responded, and it was magical for her. We read about 5 years later that the same elephant had attacked a trainer, and was killed. We were all heartbroken. As much as it's great for kids to see wildlife up close, it's just much better for the animals to live a more natural life.

I didn't even watch this, because I already know that the Electoral College ruins democracy. That's the only was a person can lose the popular vote and become president, which I think is a travesty.

Poor kid, he just wants time alone, life to go away for a while. The closest thing he knows to explain that is Time out. But when Daddy says Time out, then it means punishment. It's clear a a bell to me. Uh ohl What does that say about me?

I was lucky. Both my grandmother and my mother were excellent cooks, and I never had a jello salad until I got married. There is one jello salad with strawberry jello, strawberries, bananas and sour cream that everybody in the family likes so much it's mandatory for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
