Dancing From A To Z

(Video Link)

You don’t have to be a good speller to bust a move on the dance floor, and those who enjoy shakin' their thang spell their favorite style of dance out one step at a time.

Diesel clothing, in association with i-D Magazine, decided to explore dancing from A to Z for their unique project, and even if you weren’t impressed with my attempt to correlate the alphabet with the world of dance you’re sure to be blown away by dancers Lil Buck, Nicole the Pole and the Soul Step team as they get down in this lively video.

Hang On, We're Going Downhill

(YouTube link)

Take a ride with biker Geoff Gulevich as he takes what I’d call an extreme downhill run with a camera attached to his helmet. He calls it “taking it easy.” You might want to take a dramamine, or even a valium first. This POV video may make you feel a bit lightheaded, or possibly terrified. If you enjoy that sort of thing, watch it in full screen. This was recorded during a Red Bull-sponsored event in Utah last fall.  -via The Chive

Playing Jenga with Heavy Equipment

(YouTube link)

One surefire way to get the internet’s attention is to take something that was already fun and make it so big that someone could get hurt. In this case, it’s a super sized game of Jenga, although for copyright reasons, they call the game “Stack.” The playing pieces are 600-pound blocks of wood. The players are operating five different pieces of heavy equipment (excavators and telehandlers, etc.) in this promotional video from Cat® Products (Caterpillar). When the stack finally tips over, you’d better get out of the way fast! There's a behind-the-scenes video, too. -via Viral Viral Videos

The Family That Sings Together

(YouTube link)

When my daughters were young, I invested in CDs of Disney song compilations to play in the car, both originals and instrumental versions. We sang and passed the time on long road trips, just like millions of other families. But I can’t carry a tune, and my kids were so young they didn’t know any better.

And now, the Rochelle Family has posted their very first YouTube video. If you’ve seen a lot of these “family singing in the car” videos, you might think it’s a lip dub, but no… they are singing a medley of Disney songs in the car. Bonus: it’s not just songs from Frozen, even though it begins and ends with them.  -Thanks, Yan!

Father-Son Final Four Dance

(YouTube link)

Two basketball fans, a father and son, dance on the big screen at the NCAA championship game on Monday. Your first thought is, hey, they’re pretty good! And your second thought is, what a great relationship these two must have, because not only are they at a ball game together, but they’ve obviously spent spent plenty of time dancing together.

The father is Rob Maiden, captain of the Mavs ManiAACs, an all-male dance team with the Dallas Mavericks. He took his 15-year-old son Trey to the Final Four with the dance ready to go.

“At first it was kind a nervous. My stomach was hurting and stuff, but after we did it I was feeling much better,” Trey said.

The father-son duo decided to choreograph the dance over the weekend, just for fun.

“Sunday night, he and my other son and one of their buddies, we stood around and danced and played music, and I said, 'Let's put this together, let's make this funny, I think people will like it,'" Maiden said.

And like it they did.

Salut Salon

(YouTube link)

We always like a little comedy with our classical music (see here and here and here). The German quartet  Salut Salon gives us just that, with a performance in which every player tries to one-up the next to a ridiculous degree. They don’t drop a note anywhere along the way, as they play Antonio Vivaldi's "Summer" upside-down and backwards. All through this, I was waiting for someone to get poked in the eye with a bow, a la The Three Stooges. This is just a tad more civilized than that! -via Viral Viral Videos

Circulus

(YouTube link)

The new British acrobatic group Circulus chose an abandoned Victorian sail factory in London’s East End as the backdrop for their first video. Their act combines acrobatics and dance into a mesmerizing circus performance! The talents each performer brings to the group include “tricking, hand-to-hand, free running, dancing, juggling, tumbling, aerial hoop, cyr wheel, banquine, breakdancing, hand balancing, trampoline and more.” These folks just might go places! -via Viral Viral Videos

Airborne Circle of Life

(YouTube link)

Families have singalongs on car trips to pass the time, and don’t you wish you could get something like that going on a bus or plane? Even if you could get people to sing along, they probably wouldn’t sound all that good. But sometimes you just get lucky.

The Australian cast of The Lion King flew from Brisbane to Sydney, and a substantial number of them were in the same section of the same Virgin Australia plane. The other passengers were treated to a live and up-close version of “The Circle of Life.” That would be a flight to remember! It makes you want to grab the nearest baby and show him to the heavens. -via Buzzfeed

The Happy Trombone Loop

(YouTube link)

Christopher Bill, a 21-year-old student at the Purchase Conservatory of Music, not only performs Pharrell William’s “Happy,” but also demonstrates the magic of looping by computer. He goes from a simple beat to sounding like a full orchestra in no time at all! If you enjoy this, there’s a ton of other Christopher Bill videos, including trombone lessons. -via reddit

Something Good/Happy Together

(YouTube link)

If you enjoy 1960s pop music and/or barbershop harmonies, you’ll love this. Even of you don’t like those things, you’ll probably love this anyway. Baltimore singers Katie Gillis, Ali Hauger, Amanda McNutt, and Katie Macdonald are known as GQ, or Girls' Quartet. This arrangement of "I'm into Something Good" (made famous by Herman's Hermits) and "Happy Together" (a smash hit by The Turtles) shows what they do, and they do it well. -via Metafilter

Suor Cristina on The Voice

(YouTube link)

This Singing Nun has her Sister Act together! Sister Cristina Scuccia, a 25-year-old nun from Comiso, Sicily, sang Alicia Keys’ hit song “No One” on the Italian version of the TV show The Voice. All four celebrity judges liked what they heard enough to send her to the next level. When they turned around to see her, they were just as surprised as you’d expect. The audience loved it.

The song is in the first two minutes, so don’t be intimidated by the length of the video. But if you understand Italian, you may want to watch it all. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

The Greatest Roadside Sign Spinner Ever

(Video Link)

In some parts of the United States, it's common to see people standing by the side of the road, holding, shaking and spinning signs to attract drivers to nearby businesses. You may call them sign spinners, but marketing professionals call them "human directionals."

Sign spinners typically earn $9-20 an hour. That's what spinners for AArow Advertising in North Hollywood, California make. It's not a bad wage, but their top spinners have to master a wide array of performance techniques. Caitlan Carroll of Marketplace reports:

AArow's sign spinners don't just wiggle the sign around. The spinners perform more than 300 wacky moves that are all carefully cataloged in the company's so-called “Tricktionary.”

“The helicopter spin is a real crowd pleaser,” says Kenny. “The sidearm toss is a great one that people like to do, but I think the all-time favorite crowd pleaser is called 'the rowboat.' That's where you put the sign down just like a boat and you start rowing.”

YouTube member cowmoocher spotted the one in the video above at the corner of Centennial Avenue and Stelton Road in Piscataway, New Jersey. He's magnificent. Whatever he's earning, he deserves more.

Let It Go Meets Metal

Eric Calderone plays metal versions of songs that folks request. This is his full-time job. He says he’s received a ton of requests for “Let It Go” from the film Frozen. Dancing Detective Gets Down at Mardi Gras

(YouTube link)

Detective Winston Harbin normally works on cold cases for the homicide department of the New Orleans Police Department. But when you work for the city of New Orleans, you know you’re getting pulled for parade duty during Mardi Gras season. Still, there’s no reason not to have a little fun! Forty-nine-year-old Harbin was recorded jointing in a group doing a line dance called the Wobble during the Endymion parade on Saturday. Despite the vertical video syndrome, his dance with fellow detective Decynda Barnes and parade-goers is a real hit! Harbin was also spotted doing the Dougie and the Cupid Shuffle, which you can see at the Times-Picayune. -via Time Newsfeed
