What Is It? game 293

Hey look! It's time for our collaboration with the wonderful What Is It? Blog! Do you know what the object in this picture is? It doesn't really matter if you do, because we are looking for the funniest guesses. You can win a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! But first, read the rules:

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many as you'd like. Post no URLs or weblinks, as doing so will forfeit your entry. Two winners who submit funny and/or clever (albeit ultimately wrong) answers will each win a T-shirt from the NeatoShop.

If you guess the correct answer, you'll get a big pat on the back.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize, okay? May we suggest the Science T-Shirt, Funny T-Shirt and Artist-Designed T-Shirts?

There are more pictures of this thing at the What Is It? Blog. Good luck!

Update: It's a fisherman's surf sinker, also called a breakaway sinker, spider weight, or grapnel sinker. Neatoramanauts had much better answers. Berhard said it was the "matrix bug" that crawled into Neo's belly (in the only Matrix movie). That's funny-and worth a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! Another t-shirt goes to DrWhat who said,

I'm just going to go ahead and state the obvious. It's an electric marshmallow roaster. You poke one marshmallow on each of the four wires and then connect the two leads to your power source. A few seconds later, toasted from the inside out all ready for s'mores.

Congratulations to both! See the answers to all this weeks mystery items at the What Is It? blog.

UPdate #2: Thanks to commenter Anthony Novak, the What Is it? blog has updated their answer for this item. This is a launched grapnel hook for firing into mine fields and dragging back to detonate trip wire mines, patent number 5,448,937.

After the robot from War of the Worlds lost its 3rd leg it became redundant, got fired from its job and starved to death as a result; leaving only the carcass above.

Close, but it's actually the grappling hook for the Spy Dig Terrier Mitzy. It was one of the attachments that was part of her hair bow.

Force Choked for sure - Large.

Thanks.

If it's not the aforementioned marshmallow roaster then it must be an alien anal probe. To be honest both devices look very similar and only a trained specialist would really be able to tell the difference. I'm usually asleep when I get abducted so I never have gotten a really good look at it.

The Doctor's earliest prototype for a sonic screwdriver. This one had to be attached to a rather large battery about the size of a breadbox which the doctor later determined was too heavy and cumbersome when getting into his more rambunctious bouts with the Daleks.

It's training device to teach pirates how to properly say "Arrgh" and to perfect their pirate scowl. Just hook it to the corner of one's mouth and procede to enunciate. Happy 'Talk Like a Pirate Day'!

Clearly you all have never met a 19th century Time Lord. It's a steam-powered sonic screwdriver albeit not as sonic as the others. You hook the leads to your power source (something coal-powered) and zap from the other end.

Blimey! Those were the days. . . "The Game of Time" Men's medium please.

It's used to test for tripwires when dealing with explosives/IEDs. The hooks grab the wire, and you can use fishing line with the holes at the end.

Send me a random shirt, please. In small.

I'm surprised so few people have recognized the WWII-era prototype for the IUD. (Let's take a moment to remember the sacrifices made by the volunteer testers of that time.) It's a Trap T-shirt, Black XXL.

That's the prototype for master fisherman "Squid" Calhoun's fishing lure. The 4 hooks enable you to catch 4 fish at once, and the double line helps to compensate for the added weight. Due to his marvel in engineering, keen business sense, and his "colorful" personality, Discovery has offered him a 10 year deal for a new reality show, "Luring you in."

It is a tool for lowering into an oil well . I believe it is a transponder/sonic device to examine the earth's geology from the drilled well hole. The springs keep it centered in the casing.

It's a prototype hamster drawn sonic tracking device, used to lure sandworms to surface on the planet Arrakis. Unfortunately, due to poor design the draft hamsters were being consumed along with the lures and the program was abandoned. While longer tethers were proposed, the local teamster hamster unions refused due to unfair compensation for the harsh environmental conditions.
