Extremely Rare White Whale Found
How can the prisoner reach outside except by thrusting through the wall? To me, the white whale is that wall, shoved near to me. Sometimes I think there's naught beyond. But 'tis enough. He tasks me; he heaps me; I see in him outrageous strength, with an inscrutable malice sinewing it. That inscrutable thing is chiefly what I hate; and be the white whale agent, or be the white whale principal, I will wreak that hate upon him.
Yet this one was not Ahab's white whale, which was a sperm whale, but a white humpback whale. Dan Fisher, a maritime engineer, filmed one near the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean:
Swimming alongside a pod of other, regular grey humpback whales, this whale likely has a condition called leucism, which causes a reduction in skin pigmentation. Animals with this condition rarely survive long in the wild, because they lack their natural disguise and can more easily be picked off by predators, however the white whale, now named Willow, appears to be an adult fully incorporated into a pod.
