Meanwhile in Florida, a Raccoon is Riding on top of an Alligator

Image: Richard Jones

There's a joke in here somewhere!

Richard Jones of Palatka, Florida, and his family were walking along the Oaklawaha River in the Ocala National Forest, when he spotted a racoon on top of an alligator.

Jones told WFTV that his son had startled a raccoon, which stumbled into the water and hopped on top of the alligator nearby. "I snapped a lucky picture right when the gator slipped into the water and before the raccoon jumped off and scurried away. Without the context you'd think the raccoon was hitching a ride across the river. Pretty amazing."

School Kids Lining Up to Get Beloved Janitor's Autograph

Photo: Carrie Doig/Facebook

Every school has a rock star. For the kids at Alan Shepard Elementary School in Bourbonnais, Illinois, that rock star is Steve Weidner. He's so popular that each and every second grade student lined up near the school's playground to get him to sign their yearbooks.

But Weidner, or "Mr. Steve" as the kids called him, is not the Principal or a teacher. He's actually the school's janitor!

"He pays attention to the kids ... he knows who they are," Principal Shirley Padera said about Weidner to WGNTV, "The kids know if anything happens, Mr. Steve is going to take care of it."

"I walked through the playground to get through the building and they saw me and started running," Weidner told ABC Good Morning America, "You get one, you get them all. Once they got a line I sat down." Weidner signed all 104 of the second grader's yearbooks after lunch, and 200 more from other classes that day.

After the school district posted the photo of kids lining up for Weidner's autograph on Facebook, the image was posted to reddit and went viral.

When interviewed by MTV, Weidner professed to be caught by surprise at his Internet fame. "I’ve been signing yearbooks for years, but this is the first time that a picture had been taken. This was also the first year it’s been this crazy, because it was later in the day and the kids were already done. But I didn’t expect more then a few comments from parents on the Facebook page," Weidner said, "It gives a lot of positive exposure to custodians and shows you don’t have have to be a teacher to play a big part in a kid’s life. That’s all I’m trying to do."

When a Boat Owner Thinks Ahead ...

Mom always said to think ahead! The owner of this boat certainly did when not only did they name it "Uh-oh!" but also wrote it upside down on the stern!

This is The Big Bang Theory LEGO Set You've Been Waiting For!

If you love LEGO and The Big Bang Theory, then you'll love this: LEGO has announced that they're going to release a new set based on the hit comedy TV show. The 479-piece set features the main characters from The Big Bang Theory - Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, Penny, Raj, Amy and Bernadette - as minifigs in Leonard and Sheldon's living room (complete with details that'll make the show's fans drool).

The Big Bang Theory set was proposed by fan builders Alatariel and GlenBricker to LEGO Ideas. Then, LEGO's professional model designer Steen Sig Andersen and graphic designer Mathew Boyle worked to perfect the piece. According to LEGO Ideas, Mathew "had a lot of fun bringing elements like Sheldon's 'smile', Howard's trademark smirk, and Bernadette's scary side to life" in the minifigs.

How many references from the TV show can you spot below?

The Big Bang Theory Lego set is priced at $60 and is scheduled to be released in stores on August 1st.

A Cat Dress to End All Cat Dresses!

Photo: Jae C. Hong

Crazy cat lady ain't got nothing on this! Photographer Jae C. Hong snapped this photo of Laura Mart roaming around CatConLA (yes, a convention for cat lovers whose motto is "It's like Comic-Con ... but for cat people") in a cat dress.

And what a cat dress it was. As explained by Sue Manning of AP over in this article at SF Gate: the dress is "a ballgown she crafted from a patchwork of 300 fabric cat photos, its skirt several feet wide." And as if that's not enough, Mart also wore a furry hat and a long tail. Purrfect!

That dress just screams "check meowt" now, doesn't it?

Thank You, Captain Obvious

You’ve been a big help—far more so than General Knowledge, Major Damage, and Corporal Punishment. May you one day earn a promotion, despite the loss of a perfect punchline.

Los TeƱideros--A Chemical Reaction Where Two Rivers Meet

(Photo: José David Leiva)

Two streams in Tenorio Volcano National Park in Costa Rica merge to form the Rio Celeste. One of them has large quantities of sulfur and calcium carbonate, which gives the river a beautiful blue tint. There is a remarkably sharp dividing line when these two streams merge that is known as Los Teñideros, which means "the dyers."

The Beauty of Adding "-ing" to Movie Titles

What happens when people start adding "-ing" to movie titles? Often, hilarity ensues. And just as often, you might discover it's an hour later and you're still adding "-ing" to movie titles and laughing to yourself or with silly friends having a similar attack of slap happiness. ...I guess you had to be there (add your best in the comments).

2 Rolls of Tape in Perspective

With a little bit of paint and 2 rolls of tape hanging from a wall, Christoph Niemann creates a convincing 3-dimensional image of a bicycle. It's part of an ongoing experiment called Sunday Sketches in which Niemann mixes everyday objects and conventional artistic media. The results are quite clever.

Let's Go on a Desk Safari!

Mike Whiteside looked over his desk and noticed that the head of his co-worker in the next cubicle looked like it was part of the animal wallpaper on his screen. Thus Desk Safari was born. People take photos of office mates with their heads in just the right position to complete animals pictured on their computer monitors. Sometimes office politics can make the place like a zoo, and sometimes graphic placement can make it seem like a literal zoo.

Backyard Cubs

You’d be tempted to pet the kittens by the pool, but look carefully, because mama is always watching. It’s true that bobcats are relatively small wildcats, and would normally avoid humans rather than engaging in violence, but a mother guarding her cubs will do anything to protect them. Redditor NotSure2505 posted this photo taken yesterday at a fenced-in yard in Scottsdale, Arizona. Don’t see the mother? You can enlarge the photo at imgur. He also posted some earlier photos of a bobcat on his fence and a coyote at his child’s school.

This Is a Wheelchair for a Goldfish

This mysterious photo is circulating the internet. Redditor leability describes it as a wheelchair for a goldfish that has trouble staying upright. The dorsally-mounted cork presumably encourages proper balance. An Australian news site points to this 2011 video of a goldfish named Ada using a similar contraption.

Fangirls Travel the World to Photograph Their Favorite TV and Movie Locations

The Walking Dead, Atlanta, Georgia

The fangirls at Fangirl Quest have a mission: to screenframe their favorite TV shows and movies across the world. That means that they take iconic shots from these visual stories and frame them within photos of the locations where they were shot.

These fans, who are from Finland, began their quest with a 2013 road trip across the United States and into British Columbia. They've also extensively documented scenes shot in the UK. It's an ongoing and fun project for them to compose and us to watch! Their subjects include Game of Thrones, Sherlock, Star Trek, and Forrest Gump.

Stretch Limo Scooter

This glorious custom scooter is precisely the ride that I want. It's beautifully painted, including alll along the elongated trunk. The very low ground clearance gives it a lowrider's elegance. It could be improved only with a chopper front end and ape hanger handlebars.

You can see more photos at Kinisoku (translation).

Shark Sniffs Photographer's Camera

(Photo: Luke Thom)

Filmmaker Dave Riggs is getting ready for the Discovery Channel's Shark Week (auto-start video). While getting footage off the coast of South Australia, a 13.5 foot long female Great White Shark approached him. Curious, she examined him. Discovery News quotes Riggs:

“Of course, great whites don’t have hands, so she was researching the area in the only way she knows how -– and that’s with her mouth,” Riggs said.

So when a Great White Shark mouths you, it's like a dog smelling you. Try to be friendly in response.
