Ridiculously Short Soccer Player Optical Illusion

Photo: Yves Heman/Reuters

At 5' 6", French soccer player Mathieu Valbuena is one of the shortest players in Europe's pro soccer circuit, but the photo above by Reuters photographer Yves Heman sure made him look much, much smaller! How is this even possible?

In art it is called "forshortening"; Because a 2D picture can't show real depth, parts of the body will overlap. Certain lighting/wardrobe won't show this depth due to an overall constant light; this creates the illusion.

In the image above, the women are not little people either, but simply sitting on the knees of the men.
The soccer player is very slanted, due to sliding towards the ball.
