1946 Alcatraz Menu

This printed menu for a week in September of 1946 doesn't look half bad. Lots of courses, three square meals, different offerings every day -at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in San Francisco. Of course, anyone who has ever eaten at an institution, like a school, knows that the printed version and the actual product delivered can vary immensely. Link  -via Laughing Squid

When I look at a document like this, with its complex formatting and columns, I am amazed at the ability of the typist, who had to compose and format the document, with vertical and horizontal writing in multiple columns, entirely by hand on a typewriter. It's a virtuoso piece to look at, and I know that some people would be hard pressed to do this using a modern computerized word processor.
