Leveling Up In Real Life

Roleplaying game players have one distinct advantage over the uninitiated- we know how to approach life's trials and tribulations as part of an epic adventure.

We improve our character by raising our stats and learning new skills, we take on side quests to raise money for new gear, and we look for any opportunity to gain experience points by exploring the map.

But, as this Draw Write Play comic shows, the RPGers greatest asset is our ability to abandon a quest and still level up!

Movie Make-Up Makes Acting Hard

Full face makeup can fully transform an average human into an alien creature, monster or robot, but this transformation comes at a price- and it's the dialog that pays in the end.

Mumbled, butchered and muttered incoherently, these lines of dialog lose all weight when the actor saying them can't even move their lips under all that makeup.

And yet it's still better than those wacky overdubs they used to do back in the 60s and 70s! (NSFW due to language)

The Untold Story Behind The Hogwarts Cat

In the Harry Potter series, the caretaker at Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry is Argus Filch, who has a cat named Mrs. Norris. The cat has the run of the school, and a remarkably close bond with Filch. In fact, she's apparently the only thing he really cares about. That, and puzzlement about her name led Amanda Mannen to pose a fan theory about Mrs. Norris.

To say that Mrs. Norris is an exceptionally smart cat would be like saying Superman is an exceptionally strong dude. Filch and Mrs. Norris often work as a team, patrolling different areas of the castle for misbehaving students. Getting caught by Mrs. Norris is as bad as getting caught by Filch, because she will fetch him straight away. This means that Mrs. Norris has memorized the school's rules, understands them, and recognizes when a student is breaking them. In the first book, Hagrid tells Harry and Ron that he suspects Filch has trained Mrs. Norris to follow him specifically. You'll recognize all of these as things cats can't do. (It's been theorized that Mrs. Norris might be part Kneazle, a cat-like magical creature with superfeline intelligence, but Rowling has shot it down.) She also shows up on the Marauder's Map, while other animals don't. It's almost like she's a person in the body of a cat in a magical universe where that exact thing can definitely happen.

Yes, in this theory, Mrs. Norris is not really a cat at all! Read the various clues that lead to this conclusion, plus speculation on her backstory, at Cracked.

Artist Brings Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Poster Art To Life

(Image Link)

Johnny Depp did a great job of capturing Hunter S. Thompson's manic spirit in Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, but nothing captured the feeling of being on a suitcase full of drugs like the poster art.

That image of Hunter's head floating away from his body, the lenses of his sunglasses full of highway streaks, really brought that drug-fueled freak out feeling to life.

And then visual effects artist Kevin Kirkpatrick made the whole scene even freakier by turning it into a hyperrealistic sculpture.

Kevin created this slightly larger-than-life bust with the goal of bringing the hallucinatory artwork into the real world just as it appears on the poster, from the streaks to the stubble to the cig holder clenched between his teeth.

Kevin's sculpture is so lifelike it made this shot look unintentionally hilarious!

If Star Wars Took Place Today

Ryan Higa (previously at Neatorama) is rescued from his carbonite prison still in the world of Star Wars, but in the 21st century. He's suddenly confronted with iPads, racial diversity, cosplay, and memes. The very worst modern trope is saved for the end.

Oh, they still have lightsabers, of course, but they are a bit different. In between the jokes, this is a pretty decent action movie. You can also see a behind-the-scenes video with bloopers.  -via Tastefully Offensive

Dating: Superman Vs Batman

We all know Bruce Wayne gets along famously with the ladies, and Clark Kent was able to woo Lois Lane despite the bumbling farmboy bit, and both Batman and Superman have dated Wonder Woman.

But which one would the ideal human life partner prefer to be with?

She might start to lean towards Batman thanks to his bad boy side but then get stiffed on the bill one too many times, leaving her with a bad bat-taste in her mouth.

On the other hand ol' Supes can be supes corny at times, which is a turn off to the sophisticated women who live in Metropolis. Then again, the Bat has some creepy skeletons in his closet...

Comic artist JHALL created this comparison comic to settle the debate once and for all, and it looks like the only thing they have in common is that nobody they date will ever have to meet their parents...

Cats Play Life Like A Video Game

Most cats spend their lives searching for new sources of stimulation, and what we refer to as curiosity they see as part of their quest to explore and discover all this world has to offer.

Along the way cats learn the benefits of fast travel (on their human's shoulders), power-ups like catnip, and the joy of creating save points all over the house.

Illustrator Anna-Maria Jung and Andrew Bridgman created this strip so we can get hip to the game of life cats are playing on a daily basis, see if you can tell when your cat gains enough XP to go up a level!

Magic May Not Be Real, But This School of Witchcraft Sure Is

Do you feel like you would have made a great witch or wizard if you just got that damned Hogwarts acceptance letter? Well good news! The Bothwell School of Witchcraft is now enrolling for a short, weekend-long course in August. Classes will take place in the Herstmoncuex castle in East Sussex and aside from teaching guests potions and necromancy, the school will also help students solve a murder mystery -which they obviously know about in advance thanks to the ancient art of divination.

You can learn more about the program on their website.

The Wonderfully Nerdy Shoes of Orion's Originals

These sweet Star Wars shoes might not match, but they go together perfectly. That's because they were designed and assembled by one-of-a-kind Etsy shoe seller Orion's Originals

Their shoes aren't all inspired by Star Wars -nor are they all heels. These light-up Ghostbusters sneakers look like they've been covered in ectoplasma. In other words, they've been slimed.

And these mermaid shoes have a wedge perfectly shaped like a curvy tail that is sure to make the wearer happy to have legs to put them on.

Check out the rest of Orion's Originals shoes here.

Bait And Switch

That shiny new Nintendo Switch sure is pretty, and the console's future certainly looks bright, but as it stands right now people are hunting down and paying a fortune to play one great game.

Don't get me wrong- Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wind looks totally dreamy, but paying five hundred bucks to play a game is straight up cucco!

My takeaway from this Megacynics comic- buy the boots, they'll get you where you need to go until the price drops.

Netflix Wants to Let You Choose the Ending to Their Shows

Remember how disappointing the ending for The Sopranos was? Well, a new Netflix technology is being released to allow you to change what happens on your favorite TV shows (at least, the ones Netflix makes). The choose-your-own adventure concept could make shows way more rewatchable, but it also could make them not quite as satisfying if all the shows you watch end up the way you want them to. Plus, it will hard to ensure the same quality of acting, directing and writing when everyone involved has to create multiple story lines. And, of course, the concept will make also make it harder to talk about with freinds since what you watched might not be the same as what they watched.

You can read more about the idea and how they plan to implement it over on The Daily Mail.

What do you guys think, is this a winning concept or just another marketing gimmick destined to fail?

Watch Norman Reedus Get Dragged Out Of A Live News Broadcast

Norman Reedus became the runaway star of The Walking Dead during the show's first season, and ever since his star has continued to rise as Norman continues to give us reasons to love him.

(YouTube Link)

Recently he and TWD producer Greg Nicotero appeared on the British morning show Sky News, and they had quite a nice chat about zombies, gore and Brits acting in American TV shows.

Then the show came back from a commercial break and things got really weird, as Norman and Greg were inexplicably dragged off the set by the floor manager.

WTF Sky News? Why can't Greg and Norman talk about the weather as well?

The Disney Characters In Every Office

Most Disney movies do a poor job of presenting real life because the characters pretty much all live in a fairy tale world, where they're only forced to work in deplorable conditions as a way to develop their heroism.

But in the real world we've gotta work just to pay rent and bills and eat and stuff, and we don't become heroes by running the rat race- we just become worn out.

But if you think about it every office is full of people who resemble Disney characters- because they wander around aimlessly all day and act like they're from another world. (Comic by Paul Westover)
