Growing up with cartridge-based gaming meant dealing with cartridges prone to all sorts of little problems, so gamers were introduced to the basics of loading, using and cleaning ROM cartridges.

But most young gamers had no clue how those ROM cartridges actually functioned- we knew the “golden fingers” had to contact connectors inside the slot, but beyond that the function was a mystery.

The 8-Bit Guy created this video to show us the inner workings of an old school game cartridge, comparing their function to floppy disks and revealing how memory expanded by cartridges helped improve graphics.
